SANDPOINT — City officials are inviting city residents, business and property owners to participate in a kick-off meeting for a Comprehensive Plan update at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Sandpoint Library, 1407 Cedar St.

The meeting will be held in the community room.

The Comprehensive Plan process is an opportunity to imagine Sandpoint’s future — its neighborhoods, business corridors, education, economy, connectivity, open spaces, and all that makes our community a great place to live, work and play.

Mayor Shelby Rognstad will welcome attendees to the meeting, which will start with an opportunity to meet representatives from Logan Simpson, the city’s consultants for the project, city staff members, and fellow community members who are interested in participating in the process, said City Administrator Jennifer Stapleton in a press release.

There will be also be an overview of the Comprehensive Plan update process and timelines will be presented, and attendees will be asked to use their cellphones to answer a few questions on broad areas of interest related to the update.

“The Comprehensive Plan is a roadmap that pulls together the community’s input, ideas, and values to determine how the city will grow,” Stapleton said. “It guides locations where and how various types of development will occur (housing, neighborhoods, stores, restaurants, manufacturing, industrial, open spaces, airports, other public facilities, etc.), creates conditions that support a vibrant economy, and helps ensure the infrastructure is in place to accommodate growth.”

Other master plans such as the Parks & Recreation Master Plan and the Multimodal Transportation Plan, will integrate with the updated Comprehensive Plan and have their own community involvement opportunities, she added.

Sandpoint’s current Comprehensive Plan was completed in 2009 and an updated plan is needed to ensure the plan accurately reflect the current needs and desires of community members with projections 20 years into the future. Idaho Code requires that all cities and their planning & zoning commissions adopt comprehensive plans and it identifies the required elements.
