Busy season in store

Indications are that Priest River is to have one of the busiest seasons ever this winter. All the companies that operate in the woods are preparing to cut more logs.

Recently, C. W. Beardmore closed a contract with the Diamond Match for white pine lumber worth $1,200,000 that will take three years to execute.

All this activity means a very prosperous year for Priest River. It is estimated we will have an aggregate payroll of $150,000 a month.

90 Years Ago — 1929

Pete comes to town

Pete Chase of the Priest Lake district spent Saturday in Priest River, “Panhandle Pete,” as he is more familiarly known, is one of the pioneers of this section.

80 Years Ago — 1939

Ranch sold

The 140 acre ranch belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Carl McGinnis, located on the Peninsula, was sold to E. M Hammons. The land is better known as the Dunn ranch.

70 Years Ago — 1949

Another try to reorganize

School reorganization in Bonner County, twice defeated at the polls, will be submitted at an election again.

The reorganization board has approved the county unit plan, and as soon as reauthorization is received from the state reorganization board, county commissioners will be asked to call the election.

60 Years Ago — 1959

Two vehicles stolen

A 1953 Ford, owned by Jack Zimmer, was stolen Wednesday night at Newport, Wash., while Mrs. Zimmer was at work at the General Telephone office there.

The car was found Saturday, parked on a side road near Blanchard. The FBI have entered the case, as the stolen vehicle was take across state lines. A pickup belonging to Howard Miller of Sandpoint, a logger in this community, was taken from the West Branch Truck Service on the Priest Lake highway and was recovered Sunday, Oct. 11, parked on a side road in the Nordman area.

50 Years Ago — 1969

Rivers to be studied

Under the mandates of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, the Priest River will be studied for inclusion in the system by the U.S. Forest Service and the state of Idaho. In addition to the Priest, the group will also study the St. Joe and main Salmon rivers.

40 Years Ago — 1979

Parsons Marina burglarized

A rash of burglaries in the Priest River area culminated Friday night or early Saturday in a $6,000 larceny at Parsons Marina. Thirteen rifles and nine McCullough chain saws were stolen.

30 Years Ago — 1989

Geaudreau facility burns

The Geaudreau Lumber Mill resaw facility near Blanchard was consumed in a fire Tuesday but the damage could have been worse, according to mill owner, Wain Geaudreau and fire officials.

20 Years Ago — 1999

Weapons at school bring consequences

Several incidents involving students bringing weapons to school at Priest River Lamanna High School have prompted Principal Ron Hopkins to focus on informing parents of the consequences, while at the same time continuing his education efforts among the students.

Community support noted

As Priest River Animal Rescue enters its seventh year, enough funds were raised at the spaghetti feed/ wine tasting/auction to help finish the dog kennels. The goal continues: to save abandoned and abused animals and to place them in loving homes.
