Guinan candidacy not in question

SANDPOINT — Bonner County election officials are affirming the candidacy of Jacque Guinan, who’s running for a seat on the Sandpoint City Council.
Questions were raised last week about Guinan’s eligibility as a candidate amid claims she did not reside in the city, although Bonner County Clerk Michael Rosedale said Guinan’s residency has been established.
“She has lived in Sandpoint and registered more than 30 days before the election (on Aug. 16). So she is eligible,” Rosedale said in an email to the Daily Bee.
Supporters of Guinan’s political opponents contended Guinan’s residency didn’t match her residency in prior elections in Bonner County.
Guinan is among five candidates seeking election to three at-large seats on the council. Andy Groat, Kate McAlister, Shannon Mitchell and incumbent Deb Ruehle are also in the hunt for the seats, two of which are being vacated by councilmen Thomas Eddy and Bill Aitken.
Incumbent Mayor Shelby Rognstad is being challenged by Ken Lawrence and Councilwoman Shannon Williamson in the Nov. 5 election.
Guinan is campaigning on greater fiscal responsibility and finding solutions to the lack of affordable housing and downtown parking, in addition to easing the regulatory burden on businesses in the city.
“As you have confirmed with both the Bonner County clerk and deputy clerk, I am most certainly eligible for candidacy, and all other rumors have been dispelled as well,” Guinan said in an email to the Daily Bee.
