Pend Oreille Arts Council is hosting artists’ receptions at two locations this Friday, Nov. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit at the Power House, 120 E. Lake St., is called “Contemporary Fiber” while at the POAC Gallery, 110 Main, continues the theme “Life in Motion” with new art and artists.

“Fiber weaves through every part of our lives,” POAC’s executive director, Hanna Combs said, “from the coat that keeps us warm in a winter storm to the bristles in our hairbrushes. From these humble origins, POAC’s annual exhibit of contemporary fiber features artists elevating natural materials to an art form. The show features everything from art quilts to baskets and custom clothing to felt sculpture.”

At the POAC Gallery, paintings by local artists Lesley Gadsby, Maggie Dawson and Betty Billups will fill the walls. These women combine color and light with a palette of bright and subtle color to create dynamic artwork that is often described as inspirational.

Keeping with First Friday tradition, downtown businesses will be open late with specials from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sharon’s Hallmark, Azalea Handpicked Style, Carousel Emporium, Zwazo Niche, Meadowbrook, Outdoor Experience, Mary Ruth’s Gift Market, Burl Wood Dreams, Eve’s Leaves, The Pickled Kitchen, Northwest Handmade, Cabi, Bella Terra Boutique, ShakaPaw and ArtWorks are participating to prove that a little bit of dirt in the street can’t stop them in their tracks.

The after party starts at 7 p.m. at Pend d’Oreille Winery and showcases the amazing multi-media artwork by Jesse Pierpoint. Pierpoint combines his graphic design and fine art background to integrate a mix of typography, expressive brushstrokes, patterns and collaged media into his work.

“We’re looking forward to this being the best attended First Friday,” Combs said. “The artwork is spectacular and the downtown retailers are as excited as we are. There’ll be refreshments, wine, of course, and a good time for everyone.”
