Purple Xperience celebrates Prince, music

I grew up in the Tri-Cities, Wash., and have always loved to write. I attended the University of Washington, where I earned a double major in journalism and political science, with an area of emphasis in history. I am the fifth out of six kids — don't believe any of the stories that my siblings tell. To be able to tell others stories and take photos for a living is a dream come true — and I considered myself blessed to be a community journalist. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hiking and spending time outdoors, genealogy, reading, and watching the UW Huskies and the Seattle Seahawks. I am a servant to my cat, Frankie, who yes, will eat anything and everything in sight … even wedding cookies. | October 30, 2019 1:00 AM
It’s a Purple Xperience you won’t soon forget as Prince’s music comes to life at The Hive on Friday.
A five-piece group hailing from the iconic musician’s birthplace of Minneapolis, Minn., Purple Xperience has been touring the country since its inception in 2011 by Matt “Doctor Fink” and frontman Marshall Charloff — both of whom performed with the icon on the album “94 East” — as part of a tribute to Prince at a Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame benefit concert.
“It was after that concert that we kind of decided to give this a go,” Charloff told The Daily Bee. “Let’s try and do Prince proud and Matt actually met with Prince about it and that’s how it was set into motion.”
The show plays tribute to both the artist and his impact as a performer, artist, composer and icon in every respect, Charloff said, offering something to both the casual fan and to superfans like.
“The bar is ridiculous. It’s as high as you can get,” Charloff said. “The music speaks for itself. We tend to be about the music. Certainly, visually he was a stunning performer as well. and that just comes from channeling the energy that is already in the music. I think that as the front man and channeling that character, I think the passion it just permeates through. You feel the passion.”
A musician, composer and producer in his own right, Charloff is also multi-instrumentalist which allows Purple XPerience to keep the focus on the music and giving fans a real and authentic experience of a Prince concert. In addition to Charloff, Purple XPerience includes Tracey Blake on lead guitar, Ron Long on bass guitar, Ron Caron on drums, and Cory Eischen on keyboard.
“You’re getting the musicianship that is coming out of my spirit as well but I’m channeling my favorite artist so it keeps it real and authentic. It’s not phony. It’s not some guy up there wearing a purple coat that’s not a musician that’s faking the funk,” Charloff said. “Everybody is an all star in this organization.”
How do they do the show and do it respectfully? Charloff said it’s simple. You make it about music. That means the music and musicianship from the group is authentic, attention is paid to the kind of concert Prince gave, and the signature costumes are there.
While Purple Xperience started before Prince passed away in 2016, the concerts have taken on a special meaning in the three years since.
“It’s meant something different for me, it’s meant something different for my audience,” Charloff said. “Folks are bringing their kids to the show and there’s this sense of community in sharing this legacy and Prince’s catalogue, which was unsurpassed. So it just has more purpose now, I think.
“The first year was sad and folks were coming and there was a lot of tears, a lot of healing that was happening in the room. I think maybe in the last year of so, it’s flipped to a little bit to celebration. There’s a little more joy in the room, there’s a little bit more really celebrating Prince as an artist, Prince as an icon and his catalogue.”
For those attending the show, Charloff said Purple Xperience musicians hope concertgoers get to know Prince, this generation’s greatest musician.
“What do we want them to know?,” Charloff chuckles softly. “That Prince was amazing. He had over 100 hit singles, which is ridiculous. But there are thousands and thousands of recordings and on most of those recordings, he played every instrument on them. There’s just no comparison to anyone in existence. Even The Beatles, you know are shy of Prince’s catalogue and they were four guys and producers. He was his own producer, too. You can’t compare him to anybody.”
In addition to his work with Purple Xperience, Charloff performs nationwide fronting world-class symphonies throughout the United States and Canada. Recently, he teamed up with jazzman Marcus Anderson of New Power Generation and 3rd Eye Girl in Raleigh, N.C. to perform with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. He produced, wrote and recorded for the multi-platinum and Grammy Award-winning Commodores as well as Hall of Fame Inductee Little Anthony. Charloff is an inductee in the Mid America Music Hall Of Fame as a member of the band Westside.
Blake has played with New Power Generation, Sons of Almighty, Tracey Blake Project, and Westside. Long has played with Christina Aguilera, The Backstreet Boys, 98° and recorded with John L, Larry Blackman of Cameo, and Spike Lee. Caron has played with The Rembrandts, Tina and the B Sides, and The Melismatics. Eischen has played with New Power Generation, Prince’s protégé group Mazarati, and with Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner and Dan Wilson from Semisonic.
While the focus is in the deep and rich catalogue from Prince, if Charloff senses there are fans of his own in the crowd, he will sometimes throw in some of his own music.
“It just depends on the room. I go in thinking I’m going to play this song or that song and I find out they want to hear deeper cuts and that’s my opportunity to do that,” he said.
The Hive doors open at 7:30 p.m. with the concert starting at 9 p.m. VIP and VIP booths are available for the concert as well as general admission. You must be 21 and older. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. For more information and to purchase tickets in advance, go online to beeswaxsystems.com/thehive.
