Finding the positives in a 72-point loss

Coming off a “money” game — in the case of Idaho, the Vandals’ 79-7 loss at Penn State last Saturday in which the Nittany Lions paid Idaho $1.45 million — all you can do is look at the bright spots, and move on to the next game as quickly as possible.

Unless you’re Idaho coach Paul Petrino.

The Vandals met Sunday night, talked about it and then began preparation for Saturday’s home opener with NCAA Division II Central Washington at the Kibbie Dome.

But Petrino had obligations for three separate interviews on Tuesday, part of which included fielding questions about a game which happened some 72 hours earlier.

Some of the issues were one person getting beat on a play. Other times, the Vandals were simply outmanned by the FBS and 15th-ranked Nittany Lions.

But some things would have raised his ire no matter what level of team Idaho was playing.

“The 10 penalties were unacceptable — especially the pre-snap ones,” he said. “We don’t get penalties around here. We have to get that cleaned up.”

Petrino said linebacker Tre Walker and wide receiver Jeff Cotton “did some really good things in the first half,” but noted there was room for improvement there as well.

“I thought it was really good to have two freshmen make huge plays on special teams,” he said, referring to Sean McCormick’s blocked punt, recovered by David Eppinger.

He said defensive back Christian Nash tackled well, and Rahsaan Crawford and Noah Elliss played well on the D-line in the first half.

“It was a great catch by Nick (Romano) to get us to the 1, and a good job on Logan (Kendall) on play-action, catching the touchdown,” he said.

NOTES: Junior defensive lineman Kayode Rufai will miss the first half of the CWU game after being ejected for targeting in the second half at Penn State ... Junior Cade Coffey (Lakeland High) averaged 35.1 yards on 11 punts — most of which were the line-drive variety on rugby-style punts. Petrino said that wasn’t by design. “We were trying to punt it away from No. 1 (KJ Hamler), and maybe we got him worried to much about that and it affected him,” Petrino said. “He’s going to come back and have a great game this week.” ... Saturday is Military Appreciation Day at the Kibbie Dome. All uniformed military members and first responders, as well as those with valid ID, will receive free general admission tickets.
