The Coeur d’Alene Library’s Music Mondays Concert Series will present an evening of chamber music by the Coeur d’Alene Chamber Music Society for the season finale at 6 p.m. Monday. The concert will be inside in the community room.

CdABrass will open the evening. Their program will begin with Rossini’s “William Tell Overture” from the opera of the same name. The opera tells the story of a famous Swiss farmer who was ordered to shoot the apple off his son’s head for refusing to bow to the new Austrian overlord. For many, this piece will bring back memories of “Hi-Yo Silver, Away.” CdABrass will shift gears and follow with a jazz waltz titled “My Favorite Things” from "The Sound of Music" and conclude with “Reisterstown,” a five-movement work that paints a loving portrait of the Orthodox Jewish community in Baltimore's Reisterstown area. The first movement, "Torah Parade," evokes one of the more unusual scenes from the community as people gather and march a set of scrolls from one temple to another. "One Minute 'til Shabbat" follows a rabbi stuck in traffic as he tries to make it home before sundown. The time signature shifts several times as the seconds tick away in this minute-long piece. The third movement, "Under the Chuppah," uses flügels and the French horn to tell the story of a young bride as she walks to the chuppah under which she will wed. The jazzy "Purim" reflects one of the more interesting Jewish holidays, as all the men gather to dance and drink until late in the evening. Finally, the work concludes with "Community," which brings together many of the different elements into a lively dance, a powerful prayer, and finally a haunting echo.

Local composer and violist Diana Clemons will also perform. Clemons will play a smattering of everything — a little Bach, a little Clemons and a little of everything else fun.

Northwest Brass will follow Clemons with three selections. The first, “A Western Fanfare,” is dedicated to the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, which commissioned the work in honor of its 50th anniversary celebrations. The fanfare is a bold and uplifting work, reflecting the beauty and excitement of Santa Barbara's famous festival. Although it begins and ends with sonorous low brass and high trumpet flourishes, the middle section of the work is a lilting waltz. In the span of three minutes, a snapshot of joyful music making occurs. That will be followed by the ever-popular “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Freddie Mercury. “Bohemian Rhapsody” was a massive worldwide hit for the pop group Queen. It topped the charts in 1975 and again in 1991 and 1992. The song is somewhat unusual for a pop hit as it is in the style of a rock opera and pushed the boundaries of both pop music and promotional music video. This arrangement for brass quintet retains all the operatic gymnastics of the original. This performance will conclude with “Hungarian Dance No. 5” by J. Brahms. Brahms became interested in Hungarian music as a young musician while on a tour with the Hungarian violinist Eduard Reményi. The piano versions of Hungarian dances were then arranged...and arranged...and arranged for different instruments, different groupings, and by many musicians. Wanda Sobieska arranged this version for brass quintet.

The Flutonics (a flute ensemble) will return and play four pieces, opening with “Selections from Carman,” an arrangement of some of the most recognizable music from Bizet opera. Next they will perform a musical portrayal of the legend of Paul Bunyan and his blue ox Babe. The symphonic fairy tale “Peter and the Wolf” will follow. The performance of the last piece joins the 80th anniversary of the timeless classic “Over the Rainbow.”

The concert will conclude with a combination of the two brass groups. They will perform two pieces. The first is a four-movement suite titled “Zombie Apocalypso," Movement 1. "Calypso Honeymoon” is a festive calypso introducing many of the themes that will be explored throughout the composition. Movement 2, "A Love Undying," is a horn feature over a bossa nova groove. Movement 3, "March of the Zombies," is a tango built over a pulsating tuba line with occasional shrieks and wails by other instruments. Movement 4, "El Mariachi de la Muerta," is a paso doble featuring the trumpet and concluding with an epic battle between lovers and zombies. The “Olympic Theme” will bring the concert to a rousing conclusion.

The Coeur d’Alene Chamber Music Society was created to give local musician a chance to perform chamber music and fits right in to the ever developing Coeur d’Alene arts identity. The local area has numerous, wonderful, opportunities for musicians to participate in large groups both instrumental and vocal. CDACMS was created to fill in part of the void. The hope is that these concerts will be the beginning of a series of opportunities for musician to put together small ensemble and have a place to perform.
