Central keeps Vandals guessing

Good luck, Idaho, trying to figure out who will quarterback Central Washington tonight, when the NCAA Division II Wildcats enter the Kibbie Dome to face the Vandals.

“It’s hard to get any word who it might be,” Idaho coach Paul Petrino said. “Right now, they’re listing five guys (as the starter, on the depth chart).”

One of them, junior Braden Miles, is a transfer from Weber State. Christian Moore, a redshirt sophomore, completed 22 of 33 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns last year in relief of star QB Reilly Hennessey, who has graduated.

The other three QBs are freshmen or redshirt freshmen.

It’s a little more clear who Central’s top running back threat is. Junior Michael Roots, the GNAC Newcomer of the Year, ran for 1,067 yards and 11 touchdowns in an offense that averaged 540.9 yards and 47.7 points last year, both marks ranking the Wildcats No. 2 in all of Division II.

CWU returns three first-team all-conference selections on defense in linebackers Donte Hamilton and Tevin Gray, and defensive back Tyren Sams.

This is Central’s season opener, and the first meeting between the Wildcats and Idaho. CWU, 8-3 last season, was picked to finish second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll behind Azusa Pacific.

First-year Central Washington head coach Chris Fisk was the Wildcats’ co-offensive coordinator the past three seasons. During that time, CWU went 26-7, won two conference titles and made one trip to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Fisk replaced Ian Shoemaker, who is now Eastern Washington’s offensive coordinator.

Kelly Bills, Central’s offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, spent the last three seasons as an assistant at Weber State.

This week is more about Idaho anyway, the Vandals making adjustments after last week’s 79-7 loss at Penn State.

“We’ve got to concentrate on getting ourselves better, and understanding the plan, and really being sharp on our execution,” Petrino said.
