COEUR d’ALENE — Hosting a Washington school on Monday afternoon, the Coeur d’Alene girls soccer team decided to play by that state’s tiebreaker rules ... a decision that helped the Vikings earn their first win of the season.

Tied at 2 after 80 minutes of soccer, Coeur d’Alene received shootout goals from Julie Stith, Tierra Lambert and Kelley Lara — along with three shootout saves by Lily Foster — to defeat visiting Lewis and Clark of Spokane.

The Vikings (1-1-1) gave up two first-half goals before tying the contest with a strong second half, as Jordan Roth and Stith scored for Coeur d’Alene.

Then in the shootout, the Vikings made their three shots while Foster saved 3 of the 4 LC shots to clinch the victory.

“I’m really, really happy with how the girls played,” CHS coach Andy Vredenburg said. “We controlled most of the game, and just had a couple mistakes in the back that led to their first-half goals. I’m proud of how we stuck with it, came back strong in the second half and did well in the shootout. Lily getting those saves was big.”

The Vikings return to action Wednesday with a non-conference match at Mead High School.

First half — 1. LC, Chloe Bafus (unassisted), 25:00. 2. LC, Rachel Lee (Bafus), 30:00. Second half — 3. Cd’A, Jordan Roth (Julie Stith), 42:00. 4. Cd’A, Stith (Holly Hudson), 63:00.

Shootout goals — LC 1 (Audrianna Alfaro), Cd’A 3 (Stith, Tierra Lambert, Kelley Lara).

Saves — Cd’A, Foster 9, Autumn Lambert 5.

SANDPOINT — The visiting Timberwolves bounced back from a rough first set to win the final three sets, earning a 22-25, 25-22, 25-12, 28-26 nonconference win at Sandpoint on Monday night.

Janae Rayborn led the Lake City attack with 24 kills, Brenna Hawkins had four blocks, Hanah Stoddard had four aces and Nellie Reese tallied 35 assists.

“About halfway through the first set we lost focus and let them back in the game with some unforced errors,” Timberwolves coach Mike Summers said. “After that, we showed a lot of grit and heart and battled through, especially in that fourth set.”

Kiki Cates had 12 digs for Lake City (2-0), which travels to Gonzaga Prep tonight.
