SPIRIT LAKE — In a matchup between district rivals, the up-and-coming 4A Lakeland Hawks defeated the host and perennial state 3A qualifier Timberlake Tigers 25-19, 25-18, 25-20 in nonleague play Tuesday night.

Daphne Carroll had 10 kills and four aces, for Lakeland (6-2). Katy Ryan added 10 kills and four blocks, Abbey Neff 28 assists, Olivia Cooper 18 digs.

“It was a competitive game against the Tigers tonight,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “Both teams fought and played hard. Timberlake has great defense and got a lot of our hits up. Overall, I’m proud how hard our girls played tonight.”

For Timberlake (2-6), Brooke Jessen had 13 digs, five kills, one block and one ace, Kylie Marneris 17 digs and two aces, Taylor Suko five kills, Jaycie Pratt 11 assists and two aces.

“I thought we did a great job handling a team who is far superior at the net in terms of height,” Timberlake coach Michelle Garwood said. “Lakeland comes at you hard with their big hitters, but we totaled 48 digs as a team. Brooke Jessen and Kylie Marneris dug some great balls. Our young setters, Jaycie Pratt and Sami Wilfong, did a great job putting up a hittable ball. We did not quit and I am very proud of the performance we had tonight. At times, we were down by eight or more points, but we kept battling. It was a fun match to play, win or lose.”

Timberlake plays host to Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy on Thursday to open Intermountain League play.

Lakeland returns to action Saturday at home vs. Moscow in the 4A Inland Empire League opener.

SANDPOINT — Elly Schraeder had 12 kills, four aces and three blocks as the visiting Vikings beat the Bulldogs 25-23, 25-14, 22-25, 25-17 in nonleague play at Les Rogers Court.

Lauren Phillips added 10 kills, 12 assists and an ace for Coeur d’Alene (6-0). Madison Symons had 10 kills, Taylin Rowley 21 assists and an ace, Sarah Wilkey nine digs, Lily Hare two blocks.

“There was a lot of defense going on,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “Once we got our defense dialed back in, it helped us take control.”

Sandpoint dropped to 6-7.

Coeur d’Alene travels to Mead on Thursday.

Moscow,

Lewis and Clark

POST FALLS — Maya Blake and Ali Carpenter stepped up in both matches for the host Trojans, who defeated Moscow 25-20, 25-15, 25-22 and Lewis and Clark 26-24, 25-20, 25-23 in nonleague play at The Arena.

Blake had 15 kills and three aces vs. Moscow, and 12 kills and four aces against Lewis and Clark of the Greater Spokane League. Carpenter had 50 digs on the night, 27 in the Moscow match.

“Maya was pretty solid tonight,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “Seven aces total for the night, and she played great back row defense tonight. Our bread and butter is our defense, and it was really solid tonight.”

Brielle Nagel had 15 kills and four aces for Post Falls (3-3) against Moscow. Madi John had 14 kills vs. Moscow, nine (and two blocks) vs. Lewis and Clark. Kassie Gardiner had 32 assists against Moscow, 22 against Lewis and Clark. Kamden Fiddes had four blocks vs. Moscow. Carpenter had three aces vs. Lewis and Clark.

Post Falls plays at Lake City on Thursday in 5A Inland Empire League play.

SPOKANE — Before the game, Lake City coach Mike Summers wanted to see his team get after it against the Bullpups, playing in their first match of the season.

For the most part, Summers got his wish.

Janae Rayborn had 21 kills and 16 digs, Nellie Reece 38 assists and four aces for the Timberwolves in a 25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 20-25, 15-10 nonleague win over the Greater Spokane League foe.

“Janae was really big for us on both the offensive and defensive end,” Summers said. “I was really pleased with the first two sets. Things were starting to click that were missing in the first two matches (against Lewiston and Sandpoint), and defensively we did a lot of good things. In the third set, we kind of lost focus and battled at the end, but just had a lot of unforced errors. Before the match, I talked to the girls about being aggressive and going right at them, and they did that in the fifth set. Moving forward, we’ve got to do a better job of finishing off a team.”

Jaya Miller had 20 digs and Brenna Hawkins three blocks for Lake City (3-0), which hosts Post Falls on Thursday.

ST. MARIES — Allie Brebner had 33 digs and two aces, but the host Lumberjacks fell to the Wildcats 25-15, 26-24, 25-15 in nonleague play.

Mackenzie Hammond had eight kills, Sami Badgett 16 assists for St. Maries (0-6), which travels to Priest River on Thursday.

HARRISON FLATS — Bella Defoort had four digs for the host Warriors, who fell 25-13, 25-22, 25-23 to the Miners in the North Star League opener for both teams.

Jacey Grange had two kills, Amanda Wine two blocks, Abby Tiller one ace for Kootenai, which plays host to Mullan on Thursday. Wallace plays host to Genesis Prep on Thursday.
