Hegge holds best time

Spartan cross country coach Lance Clark decided it would be better preparation for all but one of his runners to compete at the JV level in the first meet last Saturday. Junior James Hegge was the sole Spartan runner to race against varsity opponents. Completing the course in 19:58, he had the best time of all his competitors on the dusty Naples course.

Rembowski retiring

Lynnette Rembowski is retiring as manager of the Bonner County Fair on Jan. 5. She was honored at this year’s market animal sale on Aug. 27.

“Blue Pelican” coming

After a long and drawn out battle with the Bonner County Planning and Zoning Commission dating back to September of 1988, Sam and Sheila Richie are nearing completion of their restaurant-lounge venture in Coolin. Over the Labor Day weekend the Richies held an open house for the public to come and view the progress of their construction, begun in May 1989.

White Cross Pharmacy is holding its grand opening in the new store next to the IGA Foodliner Thursday-Saturday. Door prizes and other attractions are on the agenda. Owners Gary and Connie deBlacquiere invite you to stop by to visit.

Korner robbed

The Korner business place owned and operated by Chet and Bertha Burns at Priest Lake was broken into about 2:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 1, according to Deputy Sheriff Wally Mitchell, and approximately $4,000 was taken from the safe in the post office located in the same building.

Nelson name successor

Effective July 23, Art Nelson, superintendent of the Diamond Match mill at Metaline for the past year, was named John Kerr’s successor as superintendent of the Albeni Falls mill, John Barron, northwest production manager, announced. Nelson’s lumbering experience began with the Humbird Lumber Company and carried over when the Diamond Match Company purchased the plant in 1935.

70 Years Ago — 1949

Circus man dies

The final chapter of a colorful life was closed Sept. 25, when Harry E. Handy died in a Spokane hospital. Born in Howard City, Mich., in 1878, Harry came to Priest Lake in 1892 with his father and homesteaded on Soldier Creek. Later in life, he had a wide and varied career all over the world, operating a large circuses in Australia, India, Burma, Malay and Java until the outbreak of the Japanese invasion in the Far East.

Like so much flour

Ever since the West Branch highway was built, home owners residing on this end of the road have each year had to put up with dust nuisance. This year the problem has about become unbearable. To make matters worse, road workers have now put on a coating of clay as a binder. With the continued hot and dry weather the clay is like so much flour. Residents are up in arms over the situation.

90 Years Ago — 1929

Ladies entertained

One of the outstanding events of the season socially was a delightful luncheon given at the spacious home of Mrs. Paul Mears with Mrs. Elna Jones, Mrs. R. Orr and Mrs. S. S. McEwan as joint hostesses. The home was beautifully decorated with autumn flowers, the color scheme of green and gold predominating.Auction bridge was the diversion of the afternoon.

100 Years Ago — 1919

Injured delivering beef

Frank Bombino drove in from his ranch Saturday with a load of beef. In some manner the horses he was driving became frightend, and occupants of the wagon were thrown off onto the side of the road. Mr. Bombino had three ribs broken and was bruised on the shoulder and head.
