Whatever it was, Jacob Simpson did it on Tuesday night.

Simpson scored the go-ahead goal off a rebound of a Ron Rojas shot that went off the goalpost, and the Timberlake Tigers beat the Coeur d’Alene Charter Panthers 2-1 in an Intermountain League match at Timberlake High. It was the first loss — both overall and in league — for Charter, which is fielding a boys program for the first time this year.

“We had never played them before, so we had some questions that needed to be answered,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “The boys were excited and a little nervous to get another team in our league. We’re going to be seeing them again with another close match. They played at a fast pace, but we were we able to match their speed.”

Nate Anderson had seven saves for Timberlake (5-0-1, 4-0 IML), which travels to Orofino on Thursday.

Ronan Malaghan scored in the 58th minute for Coeur d’Alene Charter (2-1, 1-1), which faces St. Maries today at The Fields at Real Life Ministries in Post Falls starting at 4 p.m.

SANDPOINT — After watching the visiting Hawks park the bus against the Bulldogs for nearly two antagonizing halves, something had to give.

For Sandpoint, that something came in the form of Sims Macdonald taking his defender one-on-one along the right side, turning the corner and serving a pass toward the near post in the 65th minute. There, 4 feet in front of the goal, freshman Stirling Roget found the ball in the ensuing chaos and ricocheted his shot into the back right corner of the net, breaking a scoreless tie and giving Sandpoint the win in the 4A Inland Empire League opener for both teams at Pine Street Field.

Sandpoint (2-3-1) outshot Lakeland (2-4-1) 18-2.

Lakeland travels to Moscow on Thursday.

COEUR d’ALENE — As Lake City coach Matt Ruchti put it, the nonleague matchup was one his team could look at as something to build on, win or lose.

Kyah Le scored two goals for the Bullpups, who jumped out to a 4-1 lead at halftime, then held on late for a win over the Timberwolves at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“It was definitely a game we needed and wanted,” Ruchti said. “They’ve got some players that we won’t see the rest of the season. They play like we want to play.”

Maddy Lasher scored two second-half goals and Izzy Henkle had a goal and assist for Lake City (3-1), which opens 5A Inland Empire League play against visiting Lewiston on Monday.

“We had some chances, but they made a few saves,” Ruchti said. “They just had a few players that were a little more efficient today. It was a good game, but if you left at halftime, you didn’t get the best part of the game. They were just a little more clinical in two moments and played really well.”

POST FALLS — Kaylee Moate scored from a corner kick by Teagen Chatterton in the 65th minute for Post Falls, which otherwise ran into some tough luck in a nonleague loss to the visiting Wildcats.

“Definitely a game of two halves tonight,” Post Falls coach Steve Mills said. “The girls made an big error in the opening minutes and I think they let it get into their heads a little bit. It took them about 30 minutes to realize they could play with a really talented team like Mt Spokane. The second half they really played so much better. We found the back of the net once, had a second goal called back for offside, and rattled the frame two additional times. I’m really proud of the effort they put into that second half.”

Miya Gibbs had a goal and an assist for Mt. Spokane (1-0-1).

Post Falls plays host to Moses Lake on Saturday.

“Charter is Charter, and they’re very well coached,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “Our girls didn’t quit. We’ve got some stuff to work on, but I’m very proud of our girls.”

Coeur d’Alene Charter (3-0, 3-0 IML) faces St. Maries at The Fields at Real Life Ministries in Post Falls today at 4 p.m.

“We always enjoy playing under the lights at Timberlake,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “We worked through a few passing and marking issues at the beginning of the game so we could start finding the back of the net. I was pleased with some of the creative play by our top line. Playing a quality opponent like Timberlake is always a great challenge for us and it exposed a few things we need to work on.”

Timberlake (3-3, 3-2) hosts St. George’s of Spokane on Saturday.
