LEWISTON — Midway through the first half, Parker Reed found a streaking Stirling Roget on a wide cross, then Roget did the rest in order to put Sandpoint ahead 1-0 at Lewiston in a non-league game on Saturday.

“Some ways that goals are scored bring a certain energy or life to a team,” Sandpoint head coach Tanner French said. “I think that goal from Stirling really sustained the work rate that was needed to come out on top today.”

Shaking off of a team-wide funk from the second week of school, French said the Bulldogs were energized and prepared to make the trek south to Lewiston, which presents its own series of challenges.

“Mentally, playing in Lewiston is a test,” French, who has experienced soccer in Lewiston both as a player and as a coach for Sandpoint, said. “The bus ride, the referees, the heat, the pitch conditions — there are all of these factors that are weighing on their minds that they have to overcome. When you see them succeed, it’s almost like getting double the benefit from playing well.”

Lewiston’s offense became predictable throughout the game, as the Bengals offense devolved into simply getting the ball to forwards Samuel Miller and Emma Kyei. French said the athleticism of Zander Moore, who made the switch from striker to playing defense against the Bengals, was instrumental to limiting Lewiston’s offensive opportunities.

Freshman goalkeeper Roman Jiles ended another full start with five saves.

Sandpoint (3-3-1) will host Moscow at Pine Street Field next Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m.

First half — 1, Sandpoint, Stirling Roget (Parker Reed), 20:00.

Shots on goal — Sandpoint 20, Lewiston 5.

Saves — Sandpoint, Roman Jiles 5. Lewiston, unknown
