IEL takes care of business against GSL foes
Jason Elliott Sports Writers | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 6 years, 2 months AGO
The 5A Inland Empire League carried the banner for North Idaho last week, going 2-1 vs. Greater Spokane League foes.
Coeur d’Alene beat Mead and Post Falls downed University, but Lake City fell to Ferris.
Last week, North Idaho and the GSL split its six matchups, so North Idaho leads the regional challenge of sorts 5-4.
The only matchup this week pitting a North Idaho squad and a GSL team takes place Saturday, when Timberlake plays Rogers at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane.
As for last week, Mark and Jason each went 4-2 on the high school games, and 3-1 on the college clashes.
Mark correctly picked Coeur d’Alene to beat Mead and Jason had Ferris beating Lake City. Both missed on Deer Park’s win at St. Maries.
Both would have been perfect on the college picks, if not for Eastern Washington’s late fade at Jacksonville State.
For the season, Jason is 13-5 on high school picks, 11-1 on college games for a 24-6 total record. Mark is 13-5 on the preps, 10-2 on the institute of higher learning games, 23-7 overall.
HIGH SCHOOL
All games Friday at 7 p.m. except where noted
Coeur d’Alene (2-1) at Eisenhower (1-1)
NELKE: The Cadets, of Yakima, beat Stadium of Tacoma 46-0 at home at Zaepfel Stadium, and lost last week at Federal Way 50-24. Coeur d’Alene is averaging 36.5 points its two victories.
Coeur d’Alene, 36-24
ELLIOTT: As a coach/parent pointed out, I didn’t pick Coeur d’Alene last week to beat Mead because of a sluggish outing against Gonzaga Prep. Hopefully I learned from last week.
Coeur d’Alene, 40-14
Lakeland (2-1) at Lake City (1-2)
NELKE: Lake City won at Rathdrum last year, a game Lakeland thought it could have won. I’m going to pick an upset here, if for no other reason than a certain Lake City administrator, in this newspaper, picked my 49ers to lose last week. He was wrong; maybe I’ll be too. But maybe not?
Lakeland, 36-32
ELLIOTT: Lake City is due for a breakout game at some point. Why not this week?
Lake City, 40-38
Moses Lake (0-2) at Post Falls (2-1)
NELKE: The Chiefs are winless, but have played two tough foes from the Greater Spokane League in Ferris (40-7) and Mt. Spokane (34-13). Lake City can vouch for how good Ferris is.
Post Falls, 42-14
ELLIOTT: Post Falls likes to use its tempo as an advantage. Kind of like my recent trip through Moses Lake, Post Falls presses the pedal down this week.
Post Falls, 48-14
Priest River (0-2) at St. Maries (2-1)
NELKE: After watching a Stag film this week (c’mon, we mean film from last week’s loss to the Deer Park Stags), St. Maries figures to bounce back from its first loss of the season. Priest River has been shut out in its two games.
St. Maries, 34-0
ELLIOTT: 2A St. Maries continues its recent dominance of the 3A Intermountain League with another win on Friday.
St. Maries, 40-0
Mullan-St. Regis (3-0, 1-0 North Star League) at Lakeside (1-0, 1-0)
NELKE: If Lakeside hopes to make the playoffs for the first time in nearly two decades, the Knights must find a way to beat the Tigers squared.
Mullan-St. Regis 48, Lakeside 36
ELLIOTT: Mullan-St. Regis has been playing really, really well this season. Lakeside is coming off a bye week.
Mullan-St. Regis 50, Lakeside 20
Timberlake (2-0) vs. Rogers (0-2) at Joe Albi Stadium, Spokane
Saturday, 6 p.m.
NELKE: Alby coaches at Albi, as Timberlake coach Roy Albertson takes his Tigers to a 69-year-old stadium that is nearly as old as he is. Timberlake has scored 90 points in two games, and Rogers has been shut out in its two games.
Timberlake, 45-0
ELLIOTT: Timberlake has been playing some great football so far this season. They continue that trend this week.
Timberlake, 34-0
COLLEGE
UCLA (0-3) at Washington State (3-0)
Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
NELKE: The Bruins, who have been outscored 95-42 this season, could have used former Coeur d’Alene Viking quarterback Colson Yankoff. But even that might not be enough, especially against the Cougars.
WSU, 48-14
ELLIOTT: Washington State has beaten up on a few teams, then had to hang on against Houston last Friday. While we don’t know just what the Cougars are right now, we know less about UCLA.
WSU 35-20
Eastern Washington (1-2) at Idaho (1-2)
Saturday, noon
NELKE: The Vandals played Wyoming, an FBS team but a ground-and-pound team, tough last week in a 21-16 loss. Eastern is not a ground-and-pound team, as Idaho saw last year in Cheney. The Vandals vowed to do better against the more dynamic offenses of the Big Sky this year; we’ll see how that goes Saturday.
EWU, 38-20
ELLIOTT: I vowed to give up Mountain Dew last year. That didn’t last either.
EWU, 48-28
Air Force (2-0) at Boise State (3-0)
Friday, 6 p.m.
NELKE: Argh! Another college game featuring a regional team on a night which should be reserved for high school football.
Boise State, 14-7
ELLIOTT: Should be an easy one, right?
Boise State, 27-17
