COEUR d’ALENE — Lake City finally got out of its own way Friday night.

And by doing that, the Timberwolves snatched a victory to make up for a win that had gotten away from them three weeks ago.

Uriah Chavez scored on a 5-yard run in overtime, and Lake City rallied from 21 points down to beat the visiting Lakeland Hawks 34-28 in nonleague high school football, the T-Wolves’ homecoming game.

“I think a lot of it has to do with the way coach (Brian) Fulp coaches,” said Chavez, who finished with 175 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries for Lake City (2-2). “We always practice in these situations, and we always perservere through everything. We all play with our hearts, no matter what the score is, no matter what’s going on, we play with what’s inside.”

But for the first half and early in the third quarter, 4A Lakeland (2-2) was in control of this game, gashing 5A Lake City with runs right up the gut, led by Trevor Vandever, who ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

The Hawks built a 28-7 lead early in the third on Brandon Furey’s 49-yard touchdown pass to Colton Boettcher.

But on Lakeland’s next six possessions, the Hawks punted three times, turned the ball over on downs twice, and lost a fumble in Lake City territory.

“I think the game was in our control, and we let it slip away from us,” Lakeland coach Tim Kiefer said. “There were a couple things that swung momentum a little bit, but I truthfully feel like it was on us.”

Chavez bounced a run outside and zipped down the right sideline for a 27-yard TD to pull Lake City within 28-14 with 8:36 left.

Lake City turned the ball over on downs on its next possession, then lost fumbles the next two times it had the ball.

The T-Wolves went for it on fourth and 3 from their own 22 with 7 minutes left, and Chris Irvin completed a deep ball to Ethan Russell for 46 yards. Five plays later, Chavez scored from 1 yard out, but the PAT kick failed, leaving Lake City trailing 28-20.

Lukas Neal recovered a Lake City fumble at the T-Wolf 35. Two plays later, Irvin hit Matthew Whitcomb on a crossing route, and Whitcomb dashed down the right sideline to complete the 65-yard scoring play. On the PAT, Irvin rolled right, then circled back left and found Russell for the tying two-point conversion with 3:53 to play.

Lakeland had the ball first in overtime but did little with it, and a pass by wide receiver/sometimes running back Ezra Grigg was intercepted in the end zone by Logan Jeanselme on fourth and goal from the 13.

On Lake City’s possession, Chavez ran 5 yards to the 5, and scored on the next play, erasing some of the T-Wolves’ early woes which included a dropped snap from center, an holding call on a TD pass and a snap that sailed over the punter’s head.

“First of all, I don’t think we handled the whole homecoming pressure very well,” Fulp said. “I’ve never seen us make that many mistakes (in the first half). We were in our own way for so much of it. And after our first game and not finishing (losing a fumbled snap in victory formation at Madison in the season over, and falling to the Bobcats in the final seconds), it was nice to be on the other end of that. I’m proud of those guys for coming back and finishing. We learned a lot from that.”

Irvin passed for 389 yards and two TDs for Lake City. Jeanselme caught 14 passes for 147 yards.

Grigg had nine catches for 73 yards for Lakeland.

“We just got to get better,” Kiefer said. “The little things ... tackling ... blown coverage here, blown coverage there. Ultimately that’s what got us.”

“I think we got in our own head,” Chavez said. “Lakeland was a tough team, but I think we got in our own head. This is the kind of win we were waiting for.”

Next Friday, Lakeland travels to Post Falls, and Lake City plays at East Valley.
