It was a happy Homecoming for the Mission Bulldogs as they beat rival Charlo, 24-6, Friday night.

Both teams had slow starts as they traded turnovers, punts and turnovers on downs in a Class C - Western Division 8-man contest.

But strong defensive play by the Bulldogs put them in position to take a 6-0 lead about midway through the second quarter.

On Charlo’s sixth possession, the Vikings had to punt from their 17 and Mission (3-1) took over at Charlo’s 35-yard line.

On a third down play, the Vikings jumped offside to give the Bulldogs a first down.

A holding penalty knocked Mission back before senior receiver Jedi Christy caught a 6-yard pass from senior quarterback Isaac Dumontier.

On the next play, Dumontier found senior tight end Trance Bird for a 36-yard TD play.

The conversion run was short but the Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead to the half that was dominated by defense.

Mission sophomore Charley Adams intercepted a pass and freshman Braydon Umphrey recovered a fumble while Vikings sophomore defensive back Braydon Zempel intercepted two passes and junior DB Roper Edwards picked off another Dumontier pass. Isaiah Allik also had a fumble recovery for the Vikings.

At halftime, Dumontier was crowned Homecoming King while Azia Umphrey was crowned the Queen.

A Vikings fumble early in the third quarter helped Mission to take a 12-0 lead.

Adams recovered a fumble and the Bulldogs took over on its 27-yard line.

Troy Matt’s 13-yard catch from Dumontier started things off well for Mission. After a scramble by Dumontier, the senior signal caller put the ball into Matt’s hands and he made some defenders miss going down the left side. Matt broke a tackle at the Charlo 10 and scored for a 12-0 lead.

Neither team scored in the third quarter but Mission put the game effectively out of reach at the 8:04 mark of the fourth when Dumontier scored on a 2-yard run for an 18-0 lead.

Strong runs by Kolton Gardipee and Matt set the Bulldogs up for the touchdown.

The Vikings then put together their best possession of the game, a 57-yard drive that Allik capped with an 8-yard TD catch from quarterback Coyle Nagy. Allik had four catches for 29 yards.

Christy recovered the onside kick. The Bulldogs then punted and another great kick from Christy pinned Charlo at its 4.

Gardipee picked off a Vikings pass and Matt scored again on a 14-yard run to set the final score.

Matt led Mission with 116 yards rushing on 17 carries with two touchdowns.

The Vikings will look to get back on the winning track Friday as they host Victor, a team Troy beat 42-18 last week.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday when they play at Seeley-Swan at 1 p.m.
