The Badger boys came out on top during three back-to-back-to-back games played last Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Badgers coach Brycen Lunger said Thursday’s game, against Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy, was easily the biggest test for the team so far this year.
“I think our team played awesome — after the first 10 minutes we controlled the tempo and played a flawless game defensively,” said Lunger. “Our defense has been a rock back there for us.”
Lunger credits the defenders — Dalin Foster, Cody Kerstiens, Tyler Lucas and Noah Walker — for shutting down “a very talented Charter attack.” Josh Beazer also had 10 saves in the shutout win.
“We had our opportunity, at the beginning of the game, to take the early lead on a breakaway from Daniel Walker but it hit the post and the game went to halftime tied 0-0,” said Lunger. “Carson Spencer scored to open up the scoring in the second half with a beautiful one touch shot from about 20 yards out that looped over the outstretched goalie and into the side netting.”
A few minutes later Dalin Foster scored, bringing the score to 2-0, which was the final score of the game.
The next game was played at home against Grangeville High School, which Lunger called a game of possession.
“We possessed the ball 90 percent of the game — the ball just wasn’t going in like we want it to,” said Lunger.
Daniel Walker scored in the first half making it 1-0, and then again in the second half, bringing the score to 2-0. Josh Beazer made eight saves during the game and defense pitched another shutout.
On Saturday, the Badger boys faced Stillwater Christian School during an away game in Kalispell, Mont. Lunger described the game as “fast tempo,” like the first time the two teams met up on the field.
“Our guys played great for having to play three games in three days,” said Lunger. “Dalin Foster scored the lone goal in the game via PK, so we led 1-0 at half.”
Lunger said that during the second half, both teams had their chances to either extend the lead or tie it up, but both goalies were up to the challenge.
“Josh easily played his best three games of the year, and topping it off with yet another shutout against another very skilled team in Stillwater,” said Lunger. “Our defense is a ‘bend but don’t break mentality’ they have great chemistry and play together.”
The boys will travel to Timberlake High School for a key Intermountain League match at 5 p.m. today, followed by a game at Priest River High School on Saturday, Sept. 28.
