Regina Redl, 85
Regina Redl gained her angel wings at the age of 85, in Coeur d’Alene. Regina was born on Sept. 6, 1934, in Yugoslavia, to Maria and Joseph Redl. She had five half sisters. When Regina was just a little girl, World War II started. After losing their land and livestock, she and her family hid in the Austrian mountains. They then continued their lives in Austria. Regina started working from a young age; she used to take care of an elderly lady. She learned to cook, clean and help out where she could.
She met Martin and they got married. They had three boys, Helmuth, Martin and Otto, in Austria before moving to St. Louis, Mo. Here, she was a housewife for a living and welcomed four more kids into the world, three boys and one girl: Garhart, Mike, Maria and John. Eventually, they moved to Lakewood, Calif., where she had one more boy, named Steve, making a total of seven sons and one daughter.
They stayed in California for quite some time and moved to Spokane, Wash., in 1975. They bought a building that had a gas station in the front and a house in the back. Martin ran a repair shop, while she raised their children and started a daycare. She has always been known for being the most caring woman, and her successful daycare was an example of that. She bought another in Spokane Valley, right across from the river, and eventually moved to Coeur d’Alene.
She was an avid gardener who always had ample fruits and vegetables growing and she loved to knit. She also loved to cook and made amazing homemade chicken noodle soup and stuffed cabbage and peppers. Regina was also known as ‘Grandma Gina’ to many. Being a mother, grandma and great-grandma was definitely her calling, and she loved each and every child, grandchild, and great-grand-child with all of her amazing heart.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Martin; her son, Garhart and her parents, Maria and Joseph. She is survived by her children, Helmuth (Sylvia) Redl, Martin Redl Jr., Otto (Veronica) Redl, Michael Redl, Maria (Frank) Davis, John (Teresa) Redl and Steve (Jodi) Redl; her 16 grandchildren, and her 20-great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass for Regina will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, 2019, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 919 E. Indiana Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814. A graveside committal will follow at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 17825 E. Trent Ave., Spokane, Wash. 99216 and a reception will follow the graveside back at St. Thomas, in Coeur d’Alene.
