Percussionaire appeals for masks to protect workers

KOOTENAI — Ventilator manufacturer Percussionaire is appealing to the public for masks to protect its employees.
Sam Shield said workers are observing distancing recommendations because of the coronavirus pandemic, but it’s not always possible on the production line.
The company reached out to its medical supply vendors, but they said they won’t be available until May at best.
“We have enough gloves. We just could not get masks anywhere,” Shield said.
The appeal made its way to social media on Wednesday and quickly received a response from the community. A local dentist said he would provide masks, as did a woman in Athol.
“I am just amazed. I am overwhelmed,” Shield said. “It’s unbelievable.”
Shield said the need for masks comes at a crucial point. The company is taking on new employees as production ramps up amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
The company is concerned that if one worker falls ill to the virus, it could sicken everyone else.
“We just want to be extra cautious,” said Shield.
Shield said the company typically employs more than 50 people and the ranks will swell as production increases.
“We figure by next week we’re going to have 75 employees,” she said.
Those who can help are asked to text Shield at 805-304-1903. They can also be taken to the back entrance of Percussionaire, which is located at 103 McGhee Rd (the former Coldwater Creek campus).
