With the high school sports season currently suspended, now seemed like a good time to crack open the Daily Bee archives and look back at what was happening with Bulldog sports 25, 15 and five years ago.

This is something we will try to do every Thursday as space allows while the current class of Sandpoint spring sports stars sits at home and waits to see if they will get a chance to compete in 2020. Heck, we may do it more often than that because who doesn’t love looking back at history.

I will say that none of the events below had any major significance relative to stakes, but seeing the names who were suiting up for the Bulldogs helps bring back great memories during these uncertain times.

25 years ago ...

On March 31, 1995, Billy Kunzeman filled in for a sick starting shortstop and notched two hits in each game and tossed a two-hit shutout in the finale as the Bulldogs beat Newport 13-3 and 18-0 in a non-league doubleheader at Memorial Field.

“He came to the park and found out he was the starting shortstop and pitching the second game, all in one breath,” Sandpoint head coach Dave Martinez said about Kunzeman at the time.

Both games were halted in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule.

Pitcher Ryan Beard won the opener, striking out seven and allowing just six hits. Geordie Osborn and Mike Lindgren each drove in four runs across the two games.

In the Bulldogs 10 run third inning in the second game, Ryan Knowles hit a three-run homer and came up later in the inning and lined a two-run triple.

15 years ago ...

On March 31, 2005, Sandpoint softball was swept at Moscow 12-2, 5-2 in an Inland Empire League doubleheader.

Nicole Buratto had a strong outing on the mound in the second game but it wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs fell to 0-6 on the season. Derek Dickinson was the Bulldogs coach at the time.

Five years ago ...

Something strange and very rare happen on Thursday, April 2, 2015, the Bulldogs’ baseball team played a makeup game at Memorial Field during the high school’s spring break. Sandpoint crushed Priest River 12-1 under the direction of head coach Scott Fitchett.
