SANDPOINT — A Blanchard man is facing nine criminal charges in Washington state after allegedly leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase and pulling a gun on an officer on Wednesday night.
Dustin Duane Pearson is charged with attempting to elude law enforcement, possession of a counterfeit narcotic, counterfeiting, possession of drugs without a prescription, unlawful possession of a firearm, second-degree assault, malicious mischief, vehicle prowling and obstructing law enforcement, according to Whitman County Jail booking records. His bond is set at $250,000.
Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers said in a news release that a deputy was responding to a vandalism complaint at the Nisqually John recreation area south of Pullman when he encountered Pearson speeding in a Honda and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
Pearson, 33, took off and speeds reached 100 mph for eight miles, according to Myers. The deputy broke off the pursuit for safety reasons and Pearson reportedly crashed into an embankment after entering the city of Pullman.
Pearson fled on foot to an apartment complex, where he allegedly threatened an officer with a loaded handgun. After a 20-minute standoff, Pearson surrendered without further incident.
“Pearson later admitted he pointed the firearm at the officer in an attempt to get the police to shoot him,” Myers said in the news release.
An unidentified passenger in the vehicle was cited and released for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, the sheriff’s office said.
