The way things are going, a gallon of gas might soon cost about what it did in 1942.

OK, maybe that’s a tad optimistic, but when you see a gallon of regular going for about a buck fifty, it does conjure up images for the older among us of really cheap gas.

While this interesting piece from the Coeur d’Alene Press on April 22, 1942, is about economizing for the war effort by cleaning auto air filters, saving gas was one of the goals. Back then, the average cost was 20 cents a gallon — which is $3.32 in today’s dollars, according to dollartimes.com.

Who knows? Maybe by Christmas, gas stations will pay us to get excess inventory off their hands.
