A Kila father is dead and his 5-year-old son is in critical condition after the motorcycle they were on collided with a deer Sunday night in Kila.

According to Flathead County Coroner Brian Heino, 42-year-old Jason Mueller died Sunday night after sustaining severe injuries.

Mueller was driving a Honda motorcycle south on Browns Meadow Road near Truman Creek Road when a deer entered the roadway, according to information from Montana Highway Patrol. The motorcycle hit the deer and both riders, who were not wearing helmets, were thrown from the bike and hit the pavement.

A witness at the scene said the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed.
