WRITERS: Something to consider

I enjoy reading the paper every day with my first cup of coffee. I like seeing what is going on in my community. I read the opinion section too, more out of curiosity, but with less enthusiasm.

The self-righteous tone of so many letters pronouncing that “everyone who doesn’t think like me must be an idiot” is very tiring, very petty. It reminds me of a joke I once heard by George Carlin: “Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?”

I guess it is human nature to think that way, but also think it might be enlightened or even mildly intelligent to recognize that perhaps you, yourself are not always right, and maybe even, occasionally, the idiot.

Humility, a trait I worship in my father, is in truly short supply these days.
