Despite losing one of the top players in the region due to graduation, Hot Springs High School volleyball coach Alisha Pablo is confident her group of returnees will be a strong contender during the 2020 season.
All-star front line player McKenzie Cannon, a 6-1 force for the Lady Savage Heat squad graduated last spring, leaving a hard to replace hole in the lineup.
But coach Pablo says she has a hard-working crew eager to build on last year’s success.
“We have a great group of players here,” Pablo said during a break in pre-season practice last week. “The girls are eager to learn and get better.”
With an emphasis on keeping everyone safe and healthy amid the Covid crisis, Pablo said the team will start off with a full schedule of games.
Social distancing as much as possible will be one of the guides as the team prepares for its season opener against traditional power Arlee on the road this Saturday.
The virus has already forced cancellation of the popular and competitive Arlee Invitational, but a full slate of games is still on the agenda.
Returning to the team is a strong group battling for playing time, led by Katelyn Christensen, a talented multi-sport junior.
“We have some positions to fill, including at setter,” Pablo said. “But Katelyn and a core group of five seniors will give us leadership. We will be fine.”
The team has been practicing two hours a day in preparation for the opener. Emphasis is being placed on conditioning and keeping the water fountains flowing.
“It’s all about hydration,” coach Pablo said.
As usual, Pablo said Charlo will be a prime contender and tough opponent as the team heads into the season.
