A Rathdrum man who police said stabbed his mother multiple times with a kitchen knife will have a preliminary hearing Friday for two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon

Kyle Sparks, 18, who was arrested last week, faces more than 15 years in prison if he's found guilty for the two felonies.

Rathdrum Police Department was dispatched at 10:33 a.m. Monday to a domestic violence call at the residence where police found Sparks' brother Zachary Cash on the front porch bleeding from his left arm, according to a police report. Cash told police that his brother had tried to kill their mother.

Police say the mother, Sherry Cupcake, was found in the living room soaked in blood. Blood also stained the carpet and was tracked throughout the house, police said.

Police said Cupcake was stabbed above her right hip, likely with a kitchen knife found in the house. Police said Cupcake also had fresh wounds on the back of one of her arms, back, and her upper body.

Cupcake told police that Sparks became enraged after she refused to take him to the Social Security office in Spokane.

Cupcake was transported by a Northern Lakes Fire District ambulance to Kootenai Health. Cash was also taken to Kootenai Health by ambulance.

Officer Greg Hudson said he saw a man running from the scene to the Stub Myers Park parking lot near the Rathdrum Clinic. Police identified the man as Sparks, who according to a report, was covered in blood and visibly upset when police contacted him. Police said Sparks was hysterical and cried out, "I just killed my mom!"

In addition to the felony charges, a no-contact order was issued mandating Sparks to stay away from Cupcake. He is also prohibited from being near knives or guns.

Sparks is in custody at the Kootenai County jail on $500,000 bail.
