CLARK FORK — Clark Fork football cruised to a 50-6 victory over Wallace on Friday night in their season opener.
"I thought we played sound football on both sides of the ball," head coach Brian Arthun said. "We gave up one 55-yard-run, but pretty much held the Wallace offense at bay. We were able to move the ball all night long."
Two-time North Star League MVP Cameron Garcia threw three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Wampus Cats.
"Cameron Garcia played like a two-time MVP of the league," Arthun said. "Just an amazing game for him."
In the first quarter, Garcia threw a pair of touchdown passes — one to Sam Barnett and one to Hank Barnett. The Barnett brothers are newcomers to the team and Arthun is glad to have them.
"They are really nice additions to our football team," he said.
Wallace broke through in the first quarter on a 55-yard touchdown run, but the Clark Fork defense held them scoreless the rest of the night.
In the second quarter, Garcia found the end zone on a 13-yard scamper and junior Carter Sanroman picked off a pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown to give the Wampus Cats a 32-6 halftime advantage.
Clark Fork scored 10 points in the third quarter. Garcia found Carter Sanroman for a 60-yard touchdown and punched the ball in to convert the two-point conversion. The Wampus Cats defense then forced the Wallace offense to commit a safety.
With a sizable advantage at the half, Arthun was able to get his younger players plenty of playing time in the second half and in the final quarter freshman quarterback Ethan Howard found freshman Chase Sanroman for a 27-yard touchdown.
"It was nice to see the looks on their faces scoring a touchdown in their first varsity game," Arthun said about the score.
Arthun believes this is the first time in his coaching career that the Wampus Cats were able to convert every single two-point attempt in a game.
Clark Fork (1-0) will get a week off before hosting Lakeside at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11.
