The Whitefish Mountain Resort’s events department had just announced adding, for the first time, an original pentathlon race to the upcoming schedule. The multi-sport race, which included nordic skiing, running, biking and paddling, was slated to happen late in the season.

Flathead County had just received $432,000 in funding from the state of Montana to relieve affordable housing issues. The funds were from the Montana Department of Commerce HOME Investment Partnerships Program and were planned to help finance housing projects valued at over $16.1 million.

An estimated 600 seasonal employees, an increase of 50 additional people from previous years, began work at the Big Mountain and a sizable number were also working in Whitefish businesses. With the influx in workers finding housing rentals was predicted to be near impossible.

A proposed R-1 residential ordinance which would limit rentals and “shared use” in those areas was shot down by the Whitefish City Council in the second of three proposed meetings. The issue revolved around whether homes in R-1 could be rented out for less than a month at a time.

The construction of a $99,130 lake and river control dam in Whitefish was deemed feasible in a report from a watershed planning party. It was proposed as a weir-type dam to be located below the Columbia Avenue bridge in Whitefish and the benefits for farmers and lakeshore owners were predicted to be astounding.

Bilingual Montessori preschool opens opportunities in Whitefish
At Big Sky Montessori, children will be greeted with, “Hola, ¿como estás?” They will learn replies like “Muy bien” meaning “very good” or “¡Fantástico!” which is Spanish for “Fantastic!” Throughout the year, the kids, ranging from ages 2 to 6 years old, will be introduced to many Spanish phrases and words in the preschool classroom.
