The 44th annual Hangover Handicap fun run set for Jan. 1 is going virtual.
The New Year’s Day annual 5-mile race traditionally attracts about 300 runners and walkers. It starts and finishes behind Michael D’s Eatery and goes along the North Idaho Centennial Trail.
Many look forward to it as a fun, healthy dash with family and friends into a new year, including Frances Huffman, CEO of Tesh, Inc.
But because Idaho is in Stage 2 of Gov. Brad Little’s “Idaho Rebounds” coronavirus recovery plan, organizers were not granted permits to hold the race.
“I am bummed. I so wanted to have this,” Huffman said Wednesday.
People can still register, order a T-shirt, pick their time and place and run.
The Hangover Handicap has raised thousands for Tesh, which helps people with disabilities develop skills and become self-sufficient through education and training.
Huffman said she has received calls from people wanting to know if they can still run the course on Jan. 1. She said since it’s on a public trail, the answer is yes, so many might still show up that morning.
She said many urged her to “keep tradition” so she and the Tesh staff did their best to do just that and hope hundreds still register.
“Just be a part of it and enjoy a healthy start to the new year,” she said.
About 50 men, women and children have already registered. Cost is $20 without a shirt, $45 with a shirt.
Register at teshinc.com, call 765-5105, or stop by 3327 W. Industrial Loop. A registration form can be mailed to those who request one.
