GRANT COUNTY -- A Mattawa woman died and another three people were injured Sunday night in a three-vehicle collision on state Route 243, south of Mattawa, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Denis Podgayets, 43, of Redmond, was reportedly driving eastbound on state Route 243 near milepost 4 shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, when he crossed the center line, according to a press release. Another two vehicles, driven by Eugenio Santiago Francisco, 40, of Mattawa, and Veronica Perez, 54, of Mattawa, were traveling westbound and attempted to avoid Podgayets as he swerved into westbound traffic.

Podgayets’ vehicle struck the car driven by Santiago Francisco on the driver’s side before continuing and striking Perez’s vehicle head on, causing it to roll, according to the state patrol.

Podgayets’ vehicle reportedly came to rest 45 feet from the roadway, while Santiago Francisco was able to pull over at a private road nearby. Perez’s vehicle came to rest on its right side.

Perez was declared dead at the scene, while her passenger, Miguel Perez, 68, of Mattawa, was hospitalized.

Santiago Francisco was not injured in the collision, but a passenger in his vehicle, Araceli Sabino Policarpio, 42, of Mattawa, was transported to Kadlec Hospital.

Podgayets also was hospitalized. It was unclear whether charges were pending against him.
