Volunteers with Glacier National Park Associates were finishing up what was a busy summer. In addition to normal trail-clearing projects, the volunteers had restored two cabins — the Rudolph Matejka homestead cabin off Camas Road and the Lincoln Cabin which was a backcountry patrol cabin near Lincoln Creek.

The owner of Rocky-Bar-O-Ranch had just agreed to a 1,000-plus-acre conservation easement with Nature Conservancy. The easement was to protect one of the most coveted pieces of private property in the North Fork of the Flathead from being subdivided.

Winter Sports, Inc., who was the owner and operator of The Big Mountain Ski and Summer Resort, was reporting that revenues were up 61% over the last year largely due to a successful summer season. A new detachable quad chairlift/gondola lift system had recently been installed and that had the chairlift ridership jumping up by nearly 19,000 rides from the previous year, an increase of 85%.

The Whitefish School Board had decided to continue withholding payment from the architects who constructed the high school that was brand new at the time. It was determined that a list of problems, including no bleachers for the gym and a leaky sprinkler system, fell on the shoulders of the architects who had the responsibility to make sure the contractors were doing their jobs correctly.

The Big Mountain had just named its first-ever official ski racing team. The resort had been in existence for 23 years, but never had its own team competing under the resort’s colors in the Northern Division Racing Campaign.
