GRANT COUNTY — A Mattawa woman died Sunday night and another three people were injured in a three-vehicle collision on state Route 243 south of Mattawa, according to the Washington state patrol.
Veronica Perez, 54, of Mattawa, was declared dead at the scene by first responders.
Denis Podgayets, 43, of Redmond, was reportedly driving eastbound on state Route 243 near milepost 4 shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday when he reportedly crossed the center line, according to a press release. A second vehicle driven by Eugenio Santiago Francisco, 40, of Mattawa, and a third driven by Perez were traveling westbound and attempted to avoid Podgayets as he swerved into westbound traffic, according to law enforcement.
Podgayets’ vehicle reportedly struck the car driven by Santiago Francisco on the driver’s side before continuing and striking Perez’s vehicle head on, causing it to roll, according to the state patrol.
Podgayets’ vehicle reportedly came to rest 45 feet from the roadway, while Santiago Francisco was able to pull over at a private road nearby. Perez’s vehicle came to rest on its right side.
Perez’s passenger, Miguel Perez, 68, of Mattawa, was hospitalized.
While Francisco Santiago was not injured in the collision, a passenger in his vehicle, Araceli Sabino Policarpio, 42, of Mattawa, was transported to Kadlec Hospital. Podgayets also was hospitalized.
