COEUR d’ALENE — Police arrested a man accused of theft after he failed to appear in court.

Dean M. Day, 33, of Coeur d’Alene, is charged with grand theft, a felony.

The charge stems from December 2019, when Day’s former employer told police Day had stolen a utility trailer from the business two months prior.

The employer reportedly discovered the trailer was missing from a storage yard in early December. Because the business had multiple job sites in Idaho and out of state, it took some time to determine that the trailer was not at any of those location.

A tracking device on the trailer reportedly led the employer to Day’s residence in Coeur d’Alene, where the trailer was recovered

Security footage allegedly showed Day taking the trailer out of the storage yard on Oct. 21.

Day had reportedly worked for the business for 14 years.

When questioned by police, a woman who identified herself as Day’s former girlfriend said Day had used the trailer to move in with her in late October, according to court documents. She said Day told her he borrowed the trailer from work.

Day allegedly told police he took the trailer but denied any intent of theft.

Prosecutors filed charges against Day in April. When he reportedly failed to appear in court in August, Judge James Combo issued a warrant for his arrest.

Police arrested Day on Tuesday. He is being held on $25,000 bail.
