4 starters back mean good things for Pack

Four starters are back for the Glacier girls’ basketball team, and the Wolfpack are among a handful of teams — thanks partly to COVID-19 — that won their last game last season.

Glacier bounced Bozeman in a Friday loser-out game at the State AA in March to square its record at 12-12; a few hours later the rest of the state tournaments were canceled, state-wide.

Gone from that team is Aubrie Rademacher, who set the single-game school record for rebounds (23), among other feats. But she left a pack of good players behind.

“Having those starters returning is amazing,” second-year Glacier coach Amanda Cram said. “And our bench is deep — I really feel that way.

“Last year we had kids come off the bench all the way through to state, like Sidney Gulick and Janessa Henson.”

The returning starters are guards Ellie Keller, Kaylee Fritz and Kenzie Williams along with Emma Anderson in the pivot. Anderson is by far the tallest of that group at 6-foot-2; Keller and Williams come in at 5-8.

But Gulick, a junior, comes in at 6-0 and seems likely to fit into the open spot.

“She’s trained as a guard but has really embraced being that forward and post,” Cram said of Gulick. “Janessa Henson would be a very small (5-8) forward, but depending on the lineup I expect her to compete for that spot as well.”

Cram also welcomes the return of Bethany Sorenson to full strength from a knee injury. The junior plays guard and was just starting to rack up varsity minutes when she was hurt last year. “I’m looking for her to have a knockout season,” Cram said.

Keller is the top returning scorer at 9.4 points per game. She’s in her third year starting at the point.

“We’re looking forward to having a really good season,” Keller said. “We have a lot of shooters because we’re really guard-heavy this year.

“Our goal every year is to make it to the state tournament, so we’re working every day to get there.”

Keller was the most accurate 3-point shooter last season, hitting 12 of 37 for 32 percent, but notes that Williams is a threat to increase on the team-high 22 threes she hit last year.

“The first person that comes to mind is Kenzie,” Keller said. “She’s really dangerous behind the line.”

Anderson averaged 8.1 points and 7.0 rebounds last season.

“We’re small but we’re very fast,” said Anderson. “We like to get out in transition -- there’s where we get most of our offense. We work well together and see the court well.

“I’m super excited for the season. We’re all super close and love to work hard, and Cram makes it easy to work hard for her.”

Cram is dealing with a team quarantine as of this writing, but has high hopes as well.

“We don’t have a lot of size, but a lot of what made us competitive last year we still have — and have added to,” she said.
