On Nov. 30, 2020, Elizabeth L. Mantz crossed over to a better place. Elizabeth was born to parents, Rueben and Grace Lowry, on June 16, 1932, in Havana, North Dakota. Her family then moved to Deer Park, Washington, where she graduated. She then worked down at the Oaksdale grain elevators, where she met her future husband, Bob Mantz.

Bob and Betty were married on Nov. 3, 1950, in Deer Park at the Congregational Church. They lived in an area of Spokane called Glenrose for 30 years. They had a son, Robert L. Mantz Jr., in 1953 and a daughter, Roxanne L. Mantz, in 1964.

Betty was very active with the Glenrose quilting group, she loved to bowl, helped with the 4-H group and was a foster mom to many of the Morningstar Boys Ranch. In 1981, they moved to Winchester, Washington, where Bob took a job with Quincy Irrigation District. She then helped her son and daughter-in-law out by babysitting her grandson, Michael, working at the fruit stand and selling cherries for them. She was very active in the Ephrata Eagles Organization, taking on many different hats, including being president of the women’s auxiliary.

In Betty’s later years, she became an avid fan of the Seahawks, Cougars, Mariners and especially the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Everyone learned not to bother Betty while she was watching the games. She also had the best brownie recipe that all the nephews and nieces wanted her to bring to the many family get-togethers.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Rueben and Grace Lowry; husband, Robert L. Mantz Sr.; her daughter, Roxanne Mantz; sisters, Joyce Taylor and Lily Gibson; and brother, Fred Lowry.

Her surviving family members are her son, Robert L. Mantz Jr. (wife, Mary); sister, Faith Terrell; brother, Robert Lowry (wife Mary Jo); brother, Dale Lowry (wife Linda); her grandson, Michael Mantz (wife Crystal); great-grandson, Jaiden Mantz; great-granddaughter Zoei Mantz; and many, many nephews and nieces.

We would like to give special thanks to the Columbia Basin Hospital nursing staff, Dr. Brzezny, and the many other staff members for the wonderful care you gave our Betty during her eight years she lived with you.

There will be no service at this time, and the family is hoping to celebrate her life in the spring. Arrangements are under the care of Nicoles Funeral Home of Ephrata, Washington.
