RATHDRUM — Adept Business Solutions' food drive in 2010 started as a fun competition with Stein’s Market.

There was one problem.

“We were so greatly outnumbered we started recruiting local businesses to help us and then over the years it’s just grown and grown,” said Diane Gardner.

The proof was stacked up in their front lobby Tuesday morning.

About 30 businesses delivered 1,100 cans and boxes of nonperishable food and $1,400 in cash donations to Adept, which is on Highway 53 in Rathdrum.

Boxes labeled “Rathdrum Food Bank” were filled with contributions that will feed hundreds of adults and children.

Dan Symons with Seright’s Ace Hardware said they were pleased to do what they could, as employees and customers pitched in.

“Being part of the community is what Seright’s Ace Hardware is all about,” he said. “We always want to contribute as much as we can.”

Lisa Freeman with The Furniture Doctors agreed.

“It’s important for us to be involved in the community and help support those who could use a little extra help during the season,” she said.

Garrett Breesnee with Sue Breesnee State Farm Insurance said the Christmas spirit is alive and well in Rathdrum, which is why the food drive was such a success.

“I still feel like everyone has it,” he said. “People are still ready for the holidays.”

The food was carried to waiting vehicles in Adept's parking lot, then delivered via caravan to the Rathdrum Food Bank a few minutes away, just off Main Street.

There, donors packed boxes inside and piled them high.

“This is wonderful,” said Judi Mustain, with the food bank.

Sharon Dillon said donations have been solid this holiday season, and they are needed.

“We’ll use them all,” she said.
