A group of Whitefish city and rural residents had just begun petitioning to put a referendum and initiative on the November 2011 ballot that would bring control over the city’s two-mile planning and zoning “doughnut” area back to the local community. The referendum was to be aimed at repealing a restatement of the interlocal agreement that established the “doughnut” area.”

It was the first opening of the brand new Tbar-2 at the Big Mountain Ski Resort. The new surface lift would open three new intermediate-level trails encompassing 20 acres of terrain, but also would provide access to over 100 acres of north facing expert terrain.

Whitefish’s population growth was creeping along according to the 1990 U.S. Census results. Whitefish had only grown 17%, Montana as a state grew a mere 2.2% over the decade while the nation’s population grew at 10.2%. Because of the slow growth Montana would lose one House seat in the U.S House of Representatives.

An all-time high prime interest rate was lurking over the nation and over Flathead Valley residents. In an already-depressed housing market at the time, real estate brokers were worried about the effect that an inflated interest rate would have on business. Buyers and sellers were being urged to keep banks out of it and set up private contracts with interest rates as low as 12%.

The Whitefish Winter Carnival had just secured a planned guest appearance from actor David Hartman who was on NBC’s series The Bold Ones at the time.
