Basketball roundup: Ephrata boys beat East Valley on half-court shot

Ephrata won dramatically over East Valley in overtime, 68-65, before dispatching rival Quincy, 78-59.

Boe Hesse nailed a half-court shot as time expired to beat the Red Devils. The Tigers led 65-60 late in the overtime period before Jace Durand scored a basket with 14 seconds left and then connected on a 30-footer to tie the game. Hesse’s heave rendered the heroics moot, however.

Ravi McConnell scored 17 points and Jayce Moore added 16 for the Tigers, who moved into a tie for third place in the Central Washington Athletic Conference.

Othello’s district hopes take hit

Othello’s chance at a district tournament berth took a blow after a 67-57 loss against Wapato.

The Wolves moved one game ahead of the Huskies for the eighth and final postseason spot. Patrick Azevedo and Juan Rambo Vallejo scored nine points apiece; Julian Alegria had 10 to lead Othello.

The Huskies lost the next night to Ellensburg 58-50.

Quincy drops games to Ellensburg, Ephrata

Quincy was outscored 15-6 in the second quarter and lost to Ellensburg 61-51.

Aidan Heikes scored 31 of the Jacks’ 51 points.

The Jacks lost to Ephrata 78-59.

ACH boys win twice

Almira/Coulee-Hartline (ACH) picked up wins against Inchelium, 75-32, and Wellpinit, 84-77.

The Warriors held Inchelium to 10 points in the second half; Reece Isaak scored 20 points.

ACH rallied from a 44-31 deficit at halftime against Wellpinit. The Warriors erupted for 32 points in the third quarter and 21 more points in the fourth.

Chase Gerard totaled 35 points and made eight 3-pointers. Isaak scored 26 points and had 10 rebounds.

Girls basketball

Ephrata adds two wins

Ephrata staved off an East Valley rally and won 54-52.

Hayden Mills and Payton Hagy scored 16 points apiece against the Red Devils.

Ephrata followed up that win with a 65-55 win against rival Quincy.

Othello falls to Wapato, Ellensburg

Othello lost its league games against Wapato, 60-53, and Ellensburg, 56-41.

Maciah Tovar had 17 points against Wapato and Analee Coronado had 10. Coronado scored 11 points against the Bulldogs.

Quincy loses twice over weekend

Quincy was unable to hang with No. 1 Ellensburg and lost 57-15.

The Jacks trailed by only six points after the first quarter but managed only nine points the rest of the game. Emily Wurl scored 10 of her team’s 15 points.

The Jacks fell to Ephrata 65-55 the next night.

ACH girls lose pair

Almira/Coulee-Hartline girls basketball lost to Inchelium, 68-43, and Wellpinit, 58-50.

Inchelium pulled away with a 19-9 second quarter and an 18-6 fourth quarter. Makenna Oliver scored 12 points for the Warriors.

Oliver scored 17 points against Wellpinit.

Men’s basketball

Spokane 84, Big Bend 70

SPOKANE — Landon Harrington scored a team-high 14 points but Big Bend lost to Spokane 84-70.

Big Bend trailed by seven points at halftime and was again outscored by seven in the second half. Jahvonta’ Jones and Jonathan Thomas added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Garrett White led Spokane with a game-high 23 points; Jaron Williams contributed 21 points off the bench for Spokane.

Women’s basketball

Spokane 80, Big Bend 79

SPOKANE — All five starters played 40 or more minutes and Big Bend lost in overtime to Spokane 80-79.

Koyama Young made consecutive baskets to give Spokane an 80-77 lead in overtime. Maelyn Mace scored on a lay-up to draw the Vikings within one point with 61 seconds to play. Big Bend could not score a go-ahead basket over the course of the final minute.

Mace evened the game, 72-72, late in the fourth quarter to force the extra period; Mace led the Vikings with 21 points. Savana Stephenson and Anna Yarbro both posted double-doubles of points and rebounds. Stephenson had 12 points, 11 rebounds and Yarbro added 10 points, 10 rebounds.

Ephrata graduate Katelyn Ostrowski scored 12 points for Spokane.
