COEUR d’ALENE — Post Falls junior Isaiah Laguna might be a little behind compared to other, more-seasoned Trojan wrestlers as far as experience goes.

But he’s gaining on them.

Laguna pinned Lakeland’s John White in 1 minute, 10 seconds in the 195-pound championship match at the North Idaho Rumble at Coeur d’Alene High’s Viking Court on Saturday.

“He’s been progressing throughout the season and continues to get better,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said of Laguna. “He’s one of the most coachable kids. He’s a kid that was kind of late to the game and started wrestling in the eighth grade, but really took to it, worked at it to gain some ground on those guys that have been wrestling a little longer than he has.”

Post Falls — which claimed its ninth straight Rumble team title — also had Roddy Romero (106 pounds), Isaac Jessen (132) and A.J. De La Rosa (145) claim titles.

“It takes a lot of hard work at all levels, from middle school to the high school,” Reardon said. “All of our assistant coaches, they’re awesome. We’ve had some great parents, and it’s made a difference.”

Other Post Falls placers include: Tyler Cook (second at 220), Ethan Miller (second at 152), Braxton Mason (second at 120), Ryan Graves (fourth at 113) and Zach Campbell (sixth at 98).

After beating Kenon Brown of Potlatch in the finals at Tri-State, Lakeland’s Colton Boettcher did it again on Saturday, winning the 170-pound title by a 7-4 decision.

“Colton came out and wrestled really well,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “He was in control of the match the entire time. The first time at Tri-State, Colton was a little more hesitant, but he came out and dominated the match tonight.”

Alex Edelblute was runner-up at 126 pounds, Riley Siegford second at 138, John White second at 195, Rhonin Edwards fourth at 152, Ryan Quimby fifth at 160, Hayden Berger sixth at 195 and Johnny Sullivan sixth at 285 for Lakeland, which finished second.

Coeur d’Alene’s Jackson Kohal notched his second win over Lake City’s Owen Hughes this week, winning the 285-pound title by a 6-3 decision.

“He’s finally figuring some things out and getting hot at the same time,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “That’s two really good wins for him, and Owen’s a tough kid that finished second at state last year. I’m really happy to see him do it.”

Gunner Giulio (160) and Drew Roberts (138) also won titles for Coeur d’Alene, which finished fourth. Christian Paniagua was fourth at 98, Filip Mjertan fifth at 195 and Andrew Stockham sixth at 182 for the Vikings.

“This tournament was probably the toughest it has ever been,” Rob Edelblute said. “We’re happy to come home with second. Some of the weights were really stacked with great kids.”

Lake City senior Caden Hess was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler after pinning Caldwell’s Hunter Bidelman in the 113-pound championship match.

“Caden had a great tournament and pinned his way through,” said Lake City assistant coach Nate DeLeon, who filled in for Corey Owen, who missed the tourney due to illness. “We were told the kid from Caldwell was really tough, but Caden took him and didn’t give him a chance. He’s been unstoppable with that arm bar this year, and showed that again today.”

Matthew Whitcomb was third at 182, Connor Dremann third at 195, Seth Nutting fourth at 170 and Zach Macdonald fifth at 98 to round out placers for Lake City.

A girls tournament was held for the second year, with Post Falls winning in an event that featured five weight classes.
