Sandpoint, Timberlake clinch league championships
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 4 years, 11 months AGO
MOSCOW — Hattie Larson and Bella Phillips scored nine points each, and the Sandpoint Bulldogs clinched the 4A Inland Empire League title with a 41-34 victory over the Moscow Bears on Saturday at Bear Den.
The victory also means Sandpoint (13-6, 3-0 4A IEL) has locked up the No. 1 seed in the regional tournament. If Sandpoint is able to complete a season sweep of the Bears when they host Moscow at 4:30 p.m. next Saturday, the Bulldogs would earn home-court advantage throughout the best-of-3 championship series against either Moscow or Lakeland, and a team would have to beat them twice at Les Rogers Court to prevent them from advancing to state.
Sandpoint, 5-15 last season, has now won or shared the league title in seven of the last eight seasons. Sandpoint shared the 4A IEL title with Moscow 2013, then won five straight league titles before Lakeland won it last year.
“The girls have worked really hard to be able to do this,” second-year Sandpoint coach Will Love said, “and it just makes me really proud of them that they’ve been able to accomplish all the stuff they have so far this season, but we’re not done. Hopefully we have a ways to go.”
Ellie Gray had 11 points and seven rebounds for Moscow (1-12, 1-2).
Sandpoint travels to West Valley on Wednesday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Different faces, but the results remain the same for the Tigers in the Intermountain League.
Taryn Soumas scored 23 points and Brooke Jessen added 21 points for the Tigers in a romp over the Wildcats to clinch a sixth straight league title.

Timberlake, ranked third in this week’s state prep media poll, led Kellogg — ranked fifth this week — 42-12 at halftime.
“We didn’t do anything special, but played really disciplined defensively all night,” Miller said. “We took good shots all game, and made quite a few.”
