ST. MARIES — Junior post Randie Becktel totaled 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists as the St. Maries Lumberjacks won their fifth Central Idaho League title in the past six seasons, beating the Grangeville Bulldogs 45-33 on Saturday.

After Grangeville (6-7, 1-2 CIL) pulled within two points in the third quarter, Becktel hit a 3-pointer and Coleman Ross had a steal and layup as St. Maries (12-4, 3-0) answered with a run of its own.

“They stuck in a zone the whole game and slowed everything down,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said of Grangeville. “We were stuck in the mud moving the ball against their zone; it took a little while to get going.”

Chase had praise for Grant Peet, the Lumberjacks’ lone senior, for his ball pressure on Grangeville’s point guard which helped Coleman Ross and Eli Gibson get some of their four steals each.

Brett Stancil hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter and scored eight of his nine points in the first half for St. Maries, which returns to action next Saturday at Kellogg.

COEUR d’ALENE — After a sluggish first half, Lake City had to get moving a little bit more in the second half.

Jack Kiesbuy and Zach Johnson scored 11 points each as the Timberwolves, who shot 8 of 29 in the first half, moved past the Bulldogs at Lake City High.

“We just finally got out and ran a little bit,” Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. “Offensively, we’re pretty good when we get out and run. We like to push the tempo, and for whatever reason, we were just sluggish offensively. We were able to get some better looks in the second half and things kind of got rolling from there.”

Kolton Mitchell scored 10 points for Lake City (12-5), which hosts Lewiston in a 5A Inland Empire League game on Thursday.

Ryan Roos and Christian Niemela scored 11 pionts each for Sandpoint (7-9), which hosts Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Playing on their old home court, Elmer Jordan Court, the 5A Vikings shot 2 for 27 in the first half of the nonleague loss to the 4A Inland Empire League-leading Bears.

“They’re big, and they made our shots tough for the most part, but we must have missed 15 layins tonight,” Coeur d’Alene coach Tony Hanna said. “Defensively we were OK; but you’re not going to beat anybody if you score 32. We didn’t seem to have a lot of energy.”

Benny Kitchell scored a game-high 19 points for Moscow (9-8), which beat Lake City earlier this season, and is 2-3 vs. the 5A IEL this year.

Coeur d’Alene finished 10 of 46 from the field for the game.

Alex Karns scored 12 points for Coeur d’Alene (6-10), which travels to 5A IEL-leading Post Falls on Thursday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Sophomore Ashton Peightal hit all three of his free throws after being fouled with a little over two minutes remaining, and the Tigers held off the Wildcats in an Intermountain League matchup between last year’s IML champs (Timberlake) and 3A District 1 champs (Kellogg).

Zach Yetter scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half for Timberlake (3-12, 2-1 IML).

“We had a great first half of basketball, but struggled a bit in the third quarter,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “We just hung tough. Zach did a great job and hit his free throws, and it just kind of gave us some breathing room. Both Zach and Ashton, they’re sophomores, and for them to step up tonight, it was huge.”

Peightal finished with 10 points, Jack McDonald 11 for Timberlake, which hosts Priest River on Thursday.

Graden Nearing scored 19 points for Kellogg (9-6, 2-1), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Thursday.

“They’re a well-coached team and great program,” Menti said of Kellogg. “I thought we did a good job of forcing them into some turnovers.”

PALOUSE, Wash. — Darren “Day Day” Higgins totaled 17 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots as the visiting Knights remained undefeated with the win over the Vikings.

“He’s played well the last four games,” Lakeside coach James Twoteeth said. “He’s been controlling the boards, and swatting 1 or 2 shots out of there each game so they don’t come in there as much.”

Emmitt White and Talon Twoteeth each scored 14 points for Lakeside (14-0), who lost point guard Kenyon Spotted Horse to a sprained ankle early in the game. Spotted Horse had sprained his other ankle a few weeks ago and missed some time.

Lakeside plays North Idaho Christian on Monday at Holy Family Catholic School in Coeur d’Alene, the Knights’ fourth game in six days.
