Beardmores entertain

A great many were present at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Beardmore Saturday evening for a reception in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Hill, who were recently married and were given a rousing ovation at the couple’s entrance.

When the tables were cleared of good things to eat, the graphaphone and piano were called upon for dancing.

90 Years Ago — 1930

Ice crossing bad

The weight of snow on the ice at Thama Ferry is making the crossing there dangerous, in the opinion of James Crunk, mail carrier.

The weight of snow is forcing the ice down and the water is forcing its way through the many small cracks in the ice.

Such action rapidly melts the ice and in a few hours it will become too thin to support a heavy car, he says.

Since the ferry has frozen in, many people are crossing on the ice.

In the interests of safety, ranchers will be forced to take the 6-mile detour through Priest River. The Pend Oreille is quite deep at that point.

80 Years Ago — 1940

Petersen Hotel saved

Fire broke out Sunday in the frame part of the Petersen Hotel on Main Street. It was thought for a time that the fire department would be unable to save the structure.

70 Years Ago — 1950

Difficult trip experienced

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Doolittle returned Sunday from a weekend business trip to Port Angeles, Wash., accompanied by Mrs. Doolittle’s sister of Bonners Ferry. The trip was made by train and many travel difficulties were experienced due to severe storms and weather conditions on the coast.

Forseth at Albeni Falls

Laurence B. Forseth, former office manager at the Diamond National Superior, Mont., plant has been promoted office manager at the Albeni Falls plant.

He, his wife and son, Douglas, have moved to Newport.

50 Years Ago — 1970

Attends sled dog races

Roger Booth was ill with the flu and his father, Mickey Booth, took his place at the annual sled dog races at Waterville, Wash.

The meet was attended by teams from Washington, Idaho, Oregon, California and Canada. Booth said the Class A main event had a total mileage of over 30 miles, and the soft trail was a real test on drivers and dogs.

Teachers show support

The Idaho Education Association sponsored a rally for teachers to provide a show of support for adequate support of education by the legislature. Priest River Lamanna High School teachers who attended the conference were Bette Ballbach and Hazel Sutton and a total of 40 Bonner County teachers accompanied them.

30 Years Ago — 1990

Suspect held without bond

A murder suspect who was transported to Bonner County from Las Vegas over the weekend made his first appearance in court Monday. David E. Robertson, 41, Priest River, faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with the Jan. 20, 1988 stabbing death of Penny Christensen, a Priest Lake teacher.

20 Years Ago — 2000

Snowmobilers found safe

A Spokane father and son survived a cold night in the mountains east of Priest Lake after their snowmobiles broke down Saturday and were found safe the next day.

Greg Fury, 63, and his son, Robert, 28, survived on candy bars and juice and warmed themselves beside a fire they started with emergency flares. They broke down in a drainage between Mount Casey and Atlasta Mountain.

Searchers were dispatched at 8 p.m. and they were found at 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Rescuers had to snowshoe to the men, who had to leave their machines on the mountain.
