Slick roads and snow contributed to the death of a Naples man who was ejected in a Boundary County crash near Bonners Ferry on Tuesday, and an accident near Post Falls that injured a juvenile.
Randall P. Merrifield, 55, lost control of his vehicle around 3:30 p.m. on U.S. 95, 13 miles south of Bonners Ferry, and struck a semi-tractor and its loaded chip trailer, police said.
Merrifield was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
According to the Idaho State Police, Merrifield was driving north when he crossed into the southbound lane, striking the truck driven by a Sedro Woolley, Wash., man.
The road was blocked for about nine hours, police said.
Another North Idaho crash that resulted in the injury of a juvenile and closed part of Interstate 90 near Post Falls for about 2 ½ hours happened three hours later.
A blue 2005 Subaru Impreza was traveling west when the unnamed juvenile driver lost control of the car, striking a jersey barrier.
While the Impreza was stopped on the right side of the interstate, the juvenile apparently stepped outside the car and was struck by a white 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 28-year-old Post Falls man who was entering the interstate from Spokane Street.
The Cherokee also struck the Impreza, police said. An oncoming driver from Spokane who was westbound on I-90 tried to avoid the crash and drove into a highway marker, police said.
Troopers did not say if those drivers were injured.
The juvenile was transported by ambulance to Kootenai Health.
Idaho State Police urges anyone who observed the crash to contact ISP at 208-209-8730.
