COEUR d’ALENE — All three sophomores who wrestled for North Idaho College on sophomore night were victorious, and a forfeit in the night’s first match proved to be the difference as the Cardinals edged NAIA Simon Fraser of Burnaby, British Columbia, 23-22 on Friday night at Christianson Gym.

Hunter Gregerson (184 pounds) and Izaiah Duran (165) won by major decision for NIC, and Micah Tynanes (197) won by decision.

“That was a nice little send-off,” NIC coach Mike Sebaaly said.

The dual ended 22-22, with each team winning five matches.

The tiebreaker was most 6-point wins, and there were no pins. The only 6-point win was Simon Fraser forfeiting to NIC at 125.

“That was a unique thing that doesn’t happen much,” Sebaaly said of the pin-less dual. “It was a competitive dual, back and forth.”

It was the third time NIC, which finished 19-4 in duals this season, met Simon Fraser this season. The Cards beat the Clansmen 36-16 in the Cardinal Duals and 34-17 at the Argos Duals in Great Falls, Mont.

NIC, ranked third in the NJCAA, now prepares for the West District championships Feb. 16 in Coos Bay, Ore. The top three finishers in each weight, along with some wild cards selected after the tourney by coaches, advance to nationals March 6-7 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

125 — Andres Lucero, NIC, by forfeit. 133 — Isaac Lopez, NIC, tf. Pritpaul Johal, 16-1. 141 — Randy McDonald, SF, md. Larry Johnson 9-1. 149 — Chase Tebbits, SF, tf. Salvador Silva, 16-1. 157 — Taber Spray, SF, tf. Conner Koch, 16-1. 165 — Izaiah Duran, NIC, md. Zachary Stratton, 16-8. 174 — Logan Nelson, SF, tf. Alan Badley, 16-0. 184 — Hunter Gregerson, NIC, md. Doug Peyser, 15-6. 197 — Micah Tynanes, NIC, d. Timothy Smith, 5-3. 285 — Taniela Feliciano-Takafua, SF, d. Cohle Feliciano, 11-6.
