Basin roundup: ML bowler Haley Rogers places 2nd in state

UNIVERSITY PLACE — Moses Lake junior Haley Rogers made a run at a state bowling championship, ultimately finishing second overall to Samantha Dolan of Emerald Ridge; Rogers totaled 1,157 pins to Dolan’s 1,186.
Rogers held a narrow seven-pin lead over Dolan after four games. However, Dolan rolled 248 in the fifth game to outscore Rogers by 56 and build a cushion before the final game. Rogers averaged just over 192 pins over the course of the six games.

Moses Lake wins state championship
BATTLE GROUND — Moses Lake scored 84.25 points and won the 1A/2A/4A Coed state championship.
Moses Lake finished ahead of second-place Bellevue Christian by 11 points.
Girls basketball
Moses Lake 62, West Valley 48
YAKIMA — Moses Lake beat West Valley 62-48 to nail down the top district seed.
Anna Olson scored a team-high 16 points and the Chiefs sunk seven 3-pointers to pull away from an upset-minded Rams team. Meagan Karstetter scored 12 points, while Madisyn Clark and Gabi Rios had nine each.
The Chiefs led 33-22 at halftime after a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Camille Carpenter. Moses Lake finishes the regular season Friday at home against Wenatchee.
Ephrata 46, Othello 32
OTHELLO — Payton Hagy led the way with 15 points as the Tigers took down Othello on the road.
Alanna Elliot had nine for Ephrata, while Hayden Mills finished with eight. Both Mills and Jocelyn Eisen finished with 10 boards. The Tigers built on their two-point lead coming out of halftime, building a double-digit lead heading into the fourth. Hagy hit a string of free throws late to hold off the Huskies. Jeweliana Pruneda led Othello with 12 points, while freshman Analee Coronado finished with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Toppenish 65, Quincy 35
TOPPENISH — Jane Kennedy scored 16 points and Quincy fell to Toppenish 65-35.
The Jacks trailed 34-15 at halftime.

WARDEN — The Cougars came back to win their second-straight game on Friday after trailing by two at the half to force the playoff-tiebreaker on Saturday against the Warriors 67-59.
Kaden Skone led the Cougars with 26 points, 12 rebounds and three assists. Ryan Skone had a career-high 12 points as well in the win. Warden head coach Wes Richins said Ayzaiah Pruneda led the team defensively, and simply “did some great things” for the Cougars on the court.
Wahluke 60, Warden 56
WARDEN — Wahluke held off a late run by the Cougars to grab the final spot in the postseason from the SCAC East 60-56.
Leading by nearly double-digits most of the way, the Warrior lead was trimmed to two with 30 seconds left. The Cougars managed to get the turnover and have a chance to tie the game, but couldn’t find the bottom of the net of a six-footer as the Warriors hit eight free throws in the final half-minute to secure the win. Dreyton Martinez led Warden with 18 points, while Kaden Skone nabbed the double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Warden head coach Wes Richins said he was proud of his team’s fight to find a way to be in contention for th final playoff spot, but “fell just a bit short.”
Toppenish 84, Quincy 63
TOPPENISH — Quincy lost to league champion Toppenish 84-63.
Trey Bierlink paced the Jacks with 23 points.

CURLEW — Almira/Coulee-Hartline built an 18-point halftime lead and beat Curlew 53-30.
Chase Gerard scored 18 points.

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend withstood a 9-0 by Yakima Valley to end the game and won 80-79.
The Runnin’ Vikes held an 80-70 lead with 1:40 to play before the Yaks made a final rally.
Kaeler Kahana led Big Bend with 24 points. Landon Harrington and Jonathan Thomas scored 15 and 11 points, respectively.

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend fell to 2-10 in the NWAC East after losing to Yakima Valley 77-70.
Anna Yarbro had a massive double-double of 21 points and 19 rebounds. Kaitlyn Callahan scored 16 points and Maelyn Mace and Savana Stephenson scored 10 points each.

Big Bend’s Yates national runner-up
MARIETTA, GA. — Big Bend women’s wrestler Aliyah Yates nearly won a national championship.
Competing at the WCWA Championships in Marietta, Georgia, Yates lost to Zoe Nowicki of Adrian in the 136-pound final 5-0.
