FACEBOOK PRIVACY-ILLINOIS

CHICAGO — A landmark $550 million settlement in a privacy lawsuit against Facebook can be traced back to a once obscure law in Illinois. The 2008 measure lets Illinois residents sue when companies fail to get consent for collecting and using biometric data. The class-action suit filed in 2015 accused Facebook of failing to tell three Illinois men and other users that its photo tagging feature was powered by facial recognition technology. Other big tech companies, including Google, have been targeted in similar suits. But the majority of Illinois cases have focused on fingerprint-based systems for tracking work hours.
