Elizabeth Rose Sweeney, 95, went to be with the Lord Feb. 4, 2020.
She was born Aug. 14, 1924, to John and Theresa Schela in Devils Lake, North Dakota. She was the sixth of eight siblings.
Her first teaching job was in Sarles, North Dakota, where she met Raymond John Sweeney. They married Sept. 3, 1946, in Devils Lake, North Dakota. They lived in Sarles and raised five children. Elizabeth taught grade school in Sarles for 32 years, teaching all five of her children. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Sarles, also a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, and an honorary member of Beta Sigma Phi of Whitefish.
She loved to travel and see the many places she taught about. Reading and quilting were among her many hobbies. She spent her entire life in the Sarles and Devils Lake area of North Dakota until she moved to Whitefish in 2014.
Elizabeth is survived by her youngest sister, Lorraine Metzger, of Byron, Minnesota; and her children, Sheila Picard of Whitefish, Edward and Lynette Sweeney of Fargo, North Dakota, Catherine and Bob Wallace of Grandbury, Texas, Albert and Rose Sweeney of Marion, and Perry and Mary Sweeney of Rathdrum, Idaho; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was a devout Catholic her entire life.
A celebration of Holy Mass will be held Tuesday, Feb. 11, at St. Richard Catholic in Columbia Falls at 11 a.m. She will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Munich, North Dakota, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Glaucoma Research Foundation or a charity of your choice.
