MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake High School hosted the Columbia Basin Big Nine boys district swim and dive finals on Saturday. The Chiefs took second as a team behind first-place Wenatchee High School.
Chiefs head coach Tony St. Onge said the meet was one of their best ever, with virtually best times across the board.
Zach Washburn took the top spot in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events over the weekend. The Moses Lake junior was also a member of the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relay teams, each of which finished second. Washburn already had state-qualifying times in all events coming in.
Senior Dylan Bond grabbed a pair of second place finishes in the 100 and 200 freestyle to secure his place at the state meet. Bond joined Washburn as the lead-off on both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams as well.
St. Onge said the senior had a phenomenal meet. The Moses Lake coach said it took lifetime best times for Bond to reach this point, but said his senior is “kind of a beast.”
“I guess you could call it, ‘he’s got game,’” St. Onge said. “He has a tendency to kind of bring it at the right time. He’s gotta bring that game to state now.”
In diving, Moses Lake’s Jace Truman grabbed a third place finish on Saturday, with Wenatchee’s Tristyn Geren grabbing the top spot.
Cole Lindberg picked up third place finishes for Moses Lake in both the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke events over the weekend, besting his prelim times in both events on Saturday. Lindberg joined Washburn and Bond on the 200 freestyle relay team also.
Kade Pack grabbed fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke in addition to a fifth-place finish in the 200 individual medley. Ryan Jorgensen picked up a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 50 freestyle and 100 yard butterfly. Jorgensen was also a member of both the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relays.
Isaac Patten took fourth in the 100 backstroke, while grabbing a seventh-place finish in the 100 yard freestyle. Patten joined Jorgensen, Bond and Washburn on the 400 freestyle relay team also. Nicholas Moore finished fourth in the 500 yard freestyle, placing sixth in the 200 free.
The relay team of Isaac Patten, Kade Pack, Matthew Thompson and Nicholas Moore placed fourth in the 200 yard medley relay.
Senior Jared Grant grabbed a third-place finish in the 50 yard backstroke after already taking fourth in the 50 freestyle as well on Saturday.
The Moses Lake head coach said his seniors really stepped up over the weekend.
Tanner Patten was able to drop his time on the 500 freestyle by 20 seconds. Matthew Thompson cut his 100 butterfly time by six. Brady Mata dropped his 500 free time by almost half a minute. Jared Grant cut his time on the 50 free by three seconds, St. Onge said, a big jump for the 50 yard event.
“We were led by seniors, they were fired up,” St. Onge said. “Our goal has always been to have our best swims the last time we ever swim.”
St. Onge said he loves when the best performances for seniors comes in their final swims. The boys swim and dive coach said he was a little concerned after the league championships, but said the team came in with best times in the prelims on Thursday.
The Moses Lake coach said his swimmers went on to “demolish” those times in the finals.
Moving forward, St. Onge said all the guys who stepped up with best performances this weekend will have to improve on their efforts to make some noise at state. While the preparation will be equal parts mental and physical, St. Onge said he knows the mental side is already there because he’s seen it in his team.
“They’ve already got that edge, we just need to make sure they’re physically ready to go by the time we get to state,” St. Onge said.
