POST FALLS — The North Idaho community is reeling after a Post Falls High School athlete and honor student took his life in his home on Friday.

"There is no stereotyping why a kid takes his own life," Superintendent Jerry Keane said Monday. "This was a good example that they don’t fit in a box. They have unique things going on in their lives that drive them to that. This is really a tragic deal."

The school gym was open Friday night and Saturday to provide a space for students and staff to come together to grieve. The Post Falls School District Crisis Assistance Team was on site over the weekend and will continue to provide support this week.

"The crisis team will be available as long as we need them there," said assistant superintendent of secondary programs Dena Naccarrato, who oversees the crisis team. "As long as we need it, we’ll have it. We can bring more people in if we need more folks."

Communication was sent out to teachers and parents Friday as soon as the district was made aware of the student's death.

“We actually called all of our staff members on Friday, because it’s so personal,” Keane said.

The district is urging parents to watch their own children to make sure they're safe in this tragic time.

“This causes so many emotional thoughts with all people related to all sorts of issues," Keane said. "We want to give a heads up to the parents so they watch their kids even more closely than they usually do."

The notice that went out to PFHS stated that students may be experiencing challenging emotions right now: sorrow, confusion and anger.

"The coming days and weeks will be a critical time to monitor how this tragedy may be affecting the thoughts and behaviors of your student. It is essential for those who are not feeling well in any way to get the help they need. We are here to help. You may contact the school office any time if you feel your student is in need of additional assistance. Students who are already vulnerable may be at greater risk due to exposure to the suicide of a peer."
