LEWISTON — Lake City had the last shot but couldn’t convert, symbolic of the Timberwolves’ self-described frustration in a 45-43 loss to the Lewiston Bengals in 5A Inland Empire League play Tuesday night at Booth Hall.

“We had our opportunities ... just didn’t cash in on them,” Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. “We didn’t shoot very well from the floor or the free-throw line.”

Seth Hanson led Lake City (13-6, 2-3 5A IEL) with 10 points.

Joel Mullikin scored a game-high 16 points for Lewiston (12-5, 3-2), which moved into sole possession of second place in league with one game remaining, Friday at home vs. fourth-place Coeur d’Alene (6-12, 1-4).

Lake City plays host to league-leading Post Falls (17-3, 4-1) on Friday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Mayson Whittaker scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half for the Vikings, who rallied from a 20-point deficit in the second half but fell short to the Bulldogs at Viking Court.

“We started putting some pressure on them and did a better job of defending in the third quarter,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Tony Hanna, whose team trailed 29-13 at halftime. “They ran a 1-3-1 in the first half and it took us a while to figure out how to attack it. We battled back and made it a game, but never quite got there.”

Kobe Banks scored 16 points, Ryan Roos 14 for Sandpoint (9-10), which travels to Lakeland on Thursday.

Coeur d’Alene (6-12) travels to Lewiston on Friday.

KELLOGG — Tiger senior Jacob James had 24 of his game-high 26 points in the first three quarters to give his team a five-point lead, but a 23-7 run in the fourth quarter gave the Wildcats the edge in the battle for first place in the Intermountain League at Andrews Gymnasium.

“Jacob was a stud tonight and everything he threw up went in,” Kellogg coach Jeff Nearing said. “He had a heck of a ballgame and looked awesome tonight. We trailed most of the game, but just kept after it.”

Kellogg freshman Kolby Luna hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one point. On its next possession, senior Graden Nearing gave the Wildcats a lead with a pair of free throws and freshman Riply Luna hit a jumper to give Kellogg a 52-48 lead.

“Riply really got us going,” Jeff Nearing said. “It was senior night, and we might have been a little unfocused for three quarters. When we buckled down and started flying around on defense, we just had a big third quarter.”

Timberlake (4-14, 3-2 IML) hosts Bonners Ferry on Thursday.

Kellogg (12-6, 4-1) travels to Wallace on Friday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Jolissa Holt, the team’s leading scorer, tallied 11 of her 16 points in the first quarter as the top-seeded Knights overcame an early deficit, then rolled past the fourth-seeded Tigers in the semifinals of the 1A Division II District 1 tournament at North Idaho College’s Rolly Williams Court.

Freshman Arianna Gorr, Lakeside’s third-leading scorer, added 14 points for the Knights (14-6).

“She has really contributed as a freshman,” Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. “It’s been a nice surprise.”

Lakeside will play No. 2 seed Clark Fork (10-10) in the championship game Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at NIC. Clark Fork beat third seed Genesis Prep 47-22 in the other semifinal. Genesis Prep finished 0-18.

Clark Fork has to beat Lakeside twice to earn the district’s lone berth to state.

Lakeside beat Clark Fork by 29 points at home in December, then won by 6 at Clark Fork last month.

Junior Emily Dykes scored 13 points to lead Mullan, which finished 6-12. Talowa Fallingwater had eight rebounds for the Tigers.
